In 2017, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari declared India would not allow driverless cars to protect the livelihoods of lakhs of drivers. That stance has softened — but only to a point. While Waymo operates commercial robotaxis in San Francisco and Phoenix, Tesla FSD tests on public roads, and China's Apollo platform logs millions of kilometres, Indian regulators remain cautious. What are Autonomous Vehicles
Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) or self-driving cars can drive without human intervention. They use:

India is unlikely to be a first mover on Level 4 robotaxis. It can, however, be a leader in Level 2-3 ADAS, autonomous logistics corridors, and mining or port autonomy. The technology already exists; the missing pieces are law, insurance, testing infrastructure and a social consensus on what to do about drivers whose livelihoods depend on a steering wheel.
