2026 Ramon Magsaysay Awards

Why in News?

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation has announced three recipients for 2026: Tommy Koh of Singapore, Bo Kyi of Myanmar and Runa Khan of Bangladesh for their contributions to international law, human rights and inclusive development.

The 2026 Awardees: 

1. Tommy Koh: Architect of the Constitution for the Oceans

UNCLOS establishes the legal framework governing oceans, including:

Territorial sea extending up to 12 nautical miles
Exclusive Economic Zone extending up to 200 nautical miles
Navigation, marine resources and continental shelves; and
Mechanisms for resolving maritime disputes.

It is therefore described as the “Constitution for the Oceans.” 

2. Bo Kyi: Defending Myanmar’s Political Prisoners 

3. Runa Khan: Humanitarian Service in Climate-Vulnerable Bangladesh

About the Ramon Magsaysay Award: 

The three awardees show how individuals and civil-society institutions can complement governments in addressing transnational and developmental challenges.
