Why in news:
Kuttiyadi coconut may be the next in the long line of agricultural crops from Kerala to receive the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) and the Kavilumpara gram panchayat in Kozhikode have taken the initiative to get this unique coconut variety its due recognition.

About GI Tag:
- GI tag identifies goods originating from a specific location and having distinct nature, quality, and characteristics linked to that location.
- GI tags are issued per the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 (GI Act).
- qIn India, Geographical Indications registration is administered by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 which came into force with effect from 15th September 2003.
- The first product in India to be accorded with GI tag was Darjeeling tea in the year 2004-05.
- GI is governed by the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO’s) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).
- A registered GI is valid for 10 years.
- GI registration is overseen by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
