How will Gaganyaan’s Thermal Shield protect the crew?

General Studies · GS III · Science & Tech

Context:

Gaganyaan’s Crew Module will re-enter the atmosphere at approximately 7.5-8 km per second. The intense aerodynamic heating generated during this phase could melt the spacecraft without a robust Thermal Protection System (TPS).

UPSC Relevance: GS-3 Science and Technology: Space Technology

Prelims & Mains: Gaganyaan Mission, Thermal Protection System

About Gaganyaan Mission:

Upon completion, India will become the fourth nation to conduct an independent human spaceflight after Russia, the United States and China.

The crew module must withstand extreme conditions during atmospheric re-entry, making the Thermal Protection System (TPS) a critical safety technology.

Why is Thermal Protection System (TPS) Necessary?

How Does Gaganyaan’s Ablative Heat Shield Work?

Gaganyaan uses an ablative TPS, in which the heat shield is deliberately sacrificed to protect the spacecraft.

Simple analogy: Like a block of wax that protects its inner portion by gradually melting and shedding its outer layers.

Major Types of Thermal Protection Systems:

Ablative TPS: Sacrifices material through decomposition and erosion; suitable for single-use spacecraft.
Radiative TPS: Absorbs heat and radiates it back into the atmosphere/space; useful for reusable spacecraft.
Heat-sink TPS: Absorbs thermal energy by increasing its own temperature without undergoing major physical/chemical change.

Why Ablative TPS for Gaganyaan?
