Additive manufacturing (AM), popularly known as 3D printing, is shifting production from subtractive and moulding processes to layer-by-layer construction from a digital file. Potential Impact

India's Position Globally

India accounts for less than 1 percent of the global AM market, which is dominated by the United States, Germany, China and Japan. Indian capabilities are strong in software, design services and selected applications (medical, jewellery), but weak in machine building, materials and certification. DRDO, HAL, ISRO and institutions such as the IITs, CMTI Bangalore and C-MET are active in R&D.
