What is agricultural biotechnology?

GM crops in India — the political economy
- Bt cotton (2002) — only commercially approved GM crop in India; >94% of cotton area uses Bt hybrids.
- Bt brinjal — approved by GEAC in 2009; indefinite moratorium placed by MoEFCC in 2010 by the Jairam Ramesh order.
- GM mustard (DMH-11) — environmental release approved by GEAC in Oct 2022; Supreme Court verdict (July 2024) — split verdict, referred to a larger bench; stay on field trials continues to evolve.

Genome-editing rules (2022)
DBT notification (March 2022) and GEAC guidance exempt SDN-1 and SDN-2 genome-edited plants (no foreign DNA) from GM regulation — a major fillip to CRISPR agriculture. SDN-3 (where DNA is inserted) remains regulated.
Nano-inputs — the new frontier
Liquid Nano Urea
- Developed by IFFCO at Kalol (Gujarat).
- Approved for commercial use June 2021.
- A 500 ml bottle (4% nitrogen) provides nitrogen equivalent to one 45 kg urea bag (46% N).
- Applied as foliar spray — better uptake, lower leaching.
- Claimed benefits: ~10% yield gain, 25-30% reduction in conventional urea, lower greenhouse emissions, improved soil health.
- Production (2024-25): IFFCO + Coromandel + NFL combined capacity exceeds 7 crore bottles/year.
Nano DAP
- Nano DAP (liquid) approved in March 2023; rolled out in 2023-24 kharif.
- 500 ml bottle replaces one 50 kg DAP bag (~18% N + 46% P₂O₅).
- Targeted foliar and seed treatment; high uptake efficiency.
Other nano-agri inputs
- Nano Zn, Cu, B — micronutrient sprays.
- Nano pesticide formulations — slow release, reduced dosage.
- Nano biosensors for soil moisture, NPK and pesticide residues.

Benefits and caveats
Benefits:
- Less runoff and groundwater nitrate.

- Better climate footprint — ~75% lower emissions per unit nitrogen delivered.
- Easier logistics — 500 ml bottle vs 45 kg bag.
Caveats (on-going debate):
- Efficacy studies — some peer-reviewed papers dispute the one-to-one substitution claim.
- Nano ecotoxicity — evidence still limited.
- Farmer uptake dependent on sprayer access.
