Coal Bed Methane is an unconventional form of natural gas locked inside coal seams. India, which holds the world's fifth-largest coal reserves, has CBM resources estimated at about 92 trillion cubic feet (TCF) or 2,600 billion cubic metres (BCM). If systematically extracted, CBM could reduce India's natural gas import dependency, strengthen energy security and reduce fugitive methane emissions from coal mining. What is Coal Bed Methane
CBM is natural gas (primarily methane) found in coal deposits or coal seams. It is formed during coalification, the long geological transformation of plant material into coal. Methane gets adsorbed on the internal surfaces of coal under pressure. When the pressure is reduced, typically by pumping water out of the coal seam (dewatering), methane desorbs and flows to the surface through wells.
Unlike conventional natural gas, which occurs in porous sandstone reservoirs, CBM sits in coal micropores. Extraction techniques differ: CBM wells are typically shallower and require continuous water production in the early years.
India's CBM resources
- Total resources: About 92 TCF or 2,600 BCM.

Uses of Coal Bed Methane
- Power generation: CBM-fired power plants.
- Automotive fuel: Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for transport.
- Feedstock for fertiliser: Substitute for LNG-based urea manufacture.
- Industrial uses: Cement production, rolling mills, steel plants, methanol production.
- Household cooking: Piped natural gas (PNG) for kitchens, replacing LPG.
CBM has the same chemical composition as conventional natural gas (over 90 percent methane), so it is interchangeable in existing gas infrastructure.
Challenges and concerns
Greenhouse gas emissions
Methane is a greenhouse gas roughly 80 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period. Global methane emissions from coal mines account for about 8 percent of total global methane emissions. Fugitive emissions during extraction and transmission can offset the climate benefit of using CBM over coal.
Land and habitat disturbance
Drilling, road access and surface facilities affect wildlife habitats. Coal-mining areas are often in forested zones, raising Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act 2023 compliance questions.
Production complexity
CBM production behaviour is complex and hard to predict in the early stages of recovery because of water dewatering dynamics, seam heterogeneity and stress conditions.
Produced water
CBM wells produce large volumes of highly salinised formation water (produced water) that must be pumped out to release methane. Disposal of this saline water can contaminate freshwater ecosystems, cause soil salinisation and damage agricultural land.
Surface-groundwater interaction
Dewatering can lower local water tables, affecting community drinking water and agriculture.
Economic viability
CBM projects need long lead times, high upfront investment and favourable gas pricing. Many Indian CBM blocks have under-performed expectations because of reservoir complexity.
Other clean coal uses being proposed
Coal gasification
Chemical process that transforms coal into synthesis gas (syngas) or other chemicals that are environmentally less degrading. India has set a target of gasifying 100 million tonnes of coal by 2030. National Mission on Coal Gasification (2020) supports the transition.
Coal with carbon capture and storage (CCS)
Capture CO2 from coal combustion and inject it into underground geological formations. Still expensive but could allow coal use under net-zero pathways. NTPC has initiated a pilot CCS project at its thermal plants.
Underground Coal Gasification (UCG)
In-situ gasification of coal seams that are too deep or uneconomical to mine, turning coal into syngas underground. Potential for India's vast unmined deep coal.
Coal washing and grading
Reduces tar and ash content, improves combustion efficiency and lowers emissions per unit of energy.
Mine rehabilitation and renewable integration
Sustainable rehabilitation of mine sites with solar, wind and pumped storage after end-of-life. Coal India has announced 3 GW of solar capacity at former mine sites.
Local socio-economic integration
Employing local people, royalty for local development and Corporate Social Responsibility in coal mining regions. Just Transition pilots are underway in Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
