Indian mobile market hit as Global Semicon industry faces severe Memflation

General Studies · GS III · Indian Economy

Why in News?

India is witnessing shortages and rising prices in the ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 smartphone segment as the global semiconductor industry faces severe “memflation”.

UPSC Relevance: GS-3 Economy: Manufacturing; Science and Technology: Emerging Technologies

Prelims: Semiconductor, DRAM, NAND Flash, India Semiconductor Mission (ISM)

What is Memflation?

Why is the Global Semiconductor Industry Experiencing Memflation?

High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is an advanced type of computer memory that is designed to provide both high bandwidth and low power consumption. It provides significantly faster data transfer rates and is essential for AI accelerators and GPUs. Major AI chips such as those used in data centres rely heavily on HBM.

As a result, the production of conventional DRAM and NAND has become constrained, and the prices of memory components have surged globally, triggering “memflation”.

Challenges in Building Semiconductor Capacity:

Hence, global supply constraints may continue through 2026-27.
