RBI approves record ₹2.86 lakh crore dividend to the Government

General Studies · GS III · Indian Economy

Why in News?

The Reserve Bank of India’s Central Board of Directors approved the transfer of a record surplus of ₹2,86,588.46 crore to the Central Government for the accounting year 2025-26. This marks the highest-ever dividend payout by the RBI.

The record transfer was driven by robust earnings, particularly large-scale US dollar sales in the foreign exchange market to defend the rupee, and higher returns on foreign currency assets amid elevated global interest rates.

The RBI simultaneously raised the Contingency Risk Buffer (CRB) significantly in view of geopolitical tensions (especially the West Asia conflict) and global financial market volatility.
