Districts in Gujarat: Current List and Official Links

Study Notes · General Studies · Geography

Districts in Gujarat: check the current 34-district list, official government links, names often confused, and how to verify changes.

The list of districts in Gujarat has 34 entries in the current National Informatics Centre directory. Vav-Tharad is included, which is why an older 33-district chart no longer matches the directory or the district government’s formation record.

A useful district list should tell you which source controls the count and where to verify each name. The table below links district government sites where NIC supplies them; it does not attach undated population figures to today’s administrative list.

How many districts are in Gujarat?

Gujarat has 34 districts in the NIC Integrated Government Online Directory. The directory links district entries to their government portals. Use the state or district government for a later change; a printed list can lag an official notification.

The Vav-Tharad district government’s history page provides a second government check for the change highlighted below.

Which Gujarat district names are easy to confuse?

These distinctions matter when you compare a current district list with older notes or a map:

How should you study Gujarat’s districts?

For GPSC or UPSC geography, connect the district names to Gujarat’s coast, Kachchh, Saurashtra and inland regions using a current official map. The source list tells you the names; a separate dated source must support any area, population or formation-date claim.

For the wider exam pattern, use our Indian states reference. A district list is most useful when it sits beside an official map and a few relevant geography facts; the names by themselves are only the first layer.

Can you compare today’s districts with Census 2011 population figures?

Only with care. Census India’s population finder reports 2011 population, while this directory describes the current administrative list. When a district was created, renamed or redrawn later, its present row does not automatically have a directly comparable 2011 figure. Quote the source year and boundary basis with any population number.

The same official-source method is used in our districts in Telangana and districts in Karnataka guides. For Uttar Pradesh, use the existing UP district reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many districts are in Gujarat?

NIC’s current state directory lists 34 districts in Gujarat. Check the directory again if a later government notification changes the list.

Where can I find the official Gujarat district list?

Use NIC’s state-wise Integrated Government Online Directory. The table on this page follows its 34 rows and links district-government portals or NIC entries.

Does Vav-Tharad count as a Gujarat district?

Yes. Vav-Tharad appears as its own entry in the current NIC directory. The district government’s history page records its creation on 2 October 2025.

Are district and division the same thing?

No. A district is an administrative unit; a division groups districts where the state uses that layer. A district count cannot be read as a division count.

Do the current districts all have Census 2011 population figures?

Not automatically. Census 2011 used its own district boundaries. A later district may need a separately documented boundary-adjusted figure, so state the year and source with any population number.
