Important Days & Dates 2026: Month-wise List for UPSC

Important days and dates appear in UPSC Prelims every year. Not in large numbers — but when they come, they’re usually easy marks. The question format is typically: “World X Day is observed on…” or “Which theme was used for World Y Day in 2026?”

January: Important Days & Dates

Key January facts:

• Republic Day (Jan 26): India became a Republic in 1950. The Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949 (Constitution Day) and came into force on January 26, 1950. The chief guest tradition at Republic Day parade is diplomatically significant.
• Parakram Divas (Jan 23): Declared in 2021 to commemorate Netaji Bose’s 125th birth anniversary.
• National Voters Day (Jan 25): Election Commission of India was established on January 25, 1950 — one day before the Constitution came into force.

February: Important Days & Dates

Key February facts:

• World Wetlands Day (Feb 2): Marks the anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (1971). India has the most Ramsar sites in Asia (75+).
• National Science Day (Feb 28): C.V. Raman announced the Raman Effect on Feb 28, 1928. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 — first Asian Nobel Prize in sciences.
• International Mother Language Day (Feb 21): UNESCO declared this day in 1999 to promote linguistic diversity. It commemorates the Language Movement of Bangladesh (1952) when students were killed protesting for Bengali recognition.

March: Important Days & Dates

Key March facts:

• World Water Day (Mar 22): UPSC-relevant because of India’s water challenges — groundwater depletion, Jal Jeevan Mission (tap water to all homes by 2024), and inter-state water disputes.
• World Wildlife Day (Mar 3): CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) was signed on March 3, 1973.
• World Tuberculosis Day (Mar 24): India has the highest TB burden globally. India’s mission is to eliminate TB by 2025 (5 years before the global target of 2030).

April: Important Days & Dates

Key April facts:

• Earth Day (Apr 22): First Earth Day was 1970. The Paris Agreement was signed on Earth Day 2016.
• National Panchayati Raj Day (Apr 24): The 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act came into force on April 24, 1993, establishing the constitutional status of Panchayati Raj. April 24 is thus marked as National Panchayati Raj Day.
• B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti (Apr 14): Ambedkar is the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. His birthday is a national holiday and called “Equality Day” in some states.

May: Important Days & Dates

Key May facts:

• National Technology Day (May 11): India conducted Pokhran nuclear tests (Operation Shakti) on May 11, 1998. Also marks first indigenous aircraft flight (Hansa-3) and Trishul missile test.
• International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22): Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) opened for signature at Rio Earth Summit on May 22, 1992.
• World Press Freedom Day (May 3): India’s press freedom ranking is a current affairs issue. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) publishes the World Press Freedom Index annually.

June: Important Days & Dates

Key June facts:

• International Yoga Day (Jun 21): Proposed by PM Narendra Modi at the UN General Assembly in September 2014. The UN adopted it with record support (175 co-sponsors). The first Yoga Day was June 21, 2015 — the summer solstice (longest day in Northern Hemisphere).
• World Environment Day (Jun 5): UNEP’s principal vehicle for promoting environmental awareness. The 1972 Stockholm Conference (June 5) on the Human Environment led to the creation of UNEP and this day.
• World Refugee Day (Jun 20): India is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention — a relevant fact for UPSC on refugees and stateless persons.

July: Important Days & Dates

Key July facts:

• Kargil Vijay Diwas (Jul 26): Marks India’s victory in the Kargil War of 1999 (Operation Vijay). Pakistan-backed militants and Pakistani soldiers had intruded into Indian positions in Kargil district of J&K. India recaptured all posts by July 26, 1999.
• International Tiger Day (Jul 29): Established at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit 2010, where 13 tiger-range countries pledged to double global tiger numbers by 2022 (TX2 goal). India exceeded this target.
• World Population Day (Jul 11): India surpassed China in 2023 to become the world’s most populous nation (~1.44 billion). UNFPA declared India the most populous country in April 2023.

August: Important Days & Dates

Key August facts:

• National Space Day (Aug 23): Declared by Government of India in 2023 after Chandrayaan-3 successfully landed on the Moon’s south pole on August 23, 2023. India became the first country to land near the lunar south pole.
• National Handloom Day (Aug 7): Commemorates the Swadeshi Movement launched on August 7, 1905. Promotes India’s handloom heritage.
• National Sports Day (Aug 29): Celebrated on the birthday of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. India’s highest sports honours (Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya) are presented on this day.

September: Important Days & Dates

Key September facts:

• World Ozone Day (Sep 16): Marks the signing of the Montreal Protocol on September 16, 1987 — one of the most successful multilateral environmental agreements. It phased out ozone-depleting substances (ODS) like CFCs. The ozone layer is gradually recovering. Kigali Amendment (2016) added HFCs (potent greenhouse gases) to the protocol.
• Hindi Diwas (Sep 14): Hindi was adopted as an official language of India on September 14, 1949. Article 343 designates Hindi in Devanagari script as the official language of the Union.
• Teachers’ Day (Sep 5): India celebrates on Radhakrishnan’s birthday (Sep 5). International Teachers’ Day is October 5.

October: Important Days & Dates

Key October facts:

• Gandhi Jayanti and World Non-Violence Day (Oct 2): The UN declared October 2 as International Day of Non-Violence in 2007 to coincide with Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.
• Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (Oct 31): National Unity Day was instituted in 2014 to mark Sardar Patel’s birth anniversary. The “Statue of Unity” in Gujarat (world’s tallest statue at 182m) was unveiled on this day in 2018.
• International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (Oct 13): Directly tied to the Sendai Framework — high UPSC relevance for GS III Disaster Management.

November: Important Days & Dates

Key November facts:

• Constitution Day (Nov 26): The Constituent Assembly adopted the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949. The government officially declared it “Constitution Day” (Samvidhan Diwas) in 2015, to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
• Children’s Day (Nov 14): Celebrated on Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday in India. Internationally, Universal Children’s Day is November 20.
• World Toilet Day (Nov 19): UPSC-relevant because of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (launched Oct 2, 2014) which aimed at open defecation-free India.

December: Important Days & Dates

Key December facts:

• National Pollution Control Day (Dec 2): Commemorates the Bhopal Gas Tragedy of December 2-3, 1984 — world’s worst industrial disaster. Union Carbide plant released methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas, killing thousands (official: ~3,787; actual estimates: 15,000-25,000 eventually).
• Human Rights Day (Dec 10): The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 10, 1948. India voted in favour (it was among the 48 nations that adopted it).
• Vijay Diwas (Dec 16): Pakistan signed the Instrument of Surrender on December 16, 1971, ending the Indo-Pakistan War. Bangladesh was created. Pakistan’s Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi surrendered to India’s Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora.
