INS Tamal: Indian Navy’s Newest Stealth Frigate — Complete Guide

Study Notes · General Studies

Complete UPSC guide to INS Tamal — the Indian Navy's Talwar-class stealth frigate, Project 1135.6, BrahMos-armed, commissioned at Yantar Shipyard Russia in July 2025.

INS Tamal (F71) is a stealth guided-missile frigate commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 2025 at Kaliningrad, Russia. She is the eighth and final foreign-built Talwar-class (Project 1135.6) frigate and belongs to a supplementary two-ship batch ordered from Russia's Yantar Shipyard under a 2018 inter-governmental agreement. Her sister ship, INS Tushil, was commissioned on 9 December 2024.

At roughly 125 metres long and displacing nearly 3,900 tonnes, INS Tamal carries one of the most potent weapon fits of any medium frigate in the world — led by the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile — and reinforces Indo-Russian defence cooperation at a time when India is rapidly building indigenous warships under Project 17A.

Talwar Class (Project 1135.6) — The Lineage

The Talwar class is an Indian-specific modification of the Russian Krivak III / Burevestnik family of frigates. The full order book now stands at ten ships in total, split across three tranches:

TrancheShipsBuilderCommissioned
First tranche (3)Talwar, Trishul, TabarBaltiysky, Russia2003–2004
Second tranche (3)Teg, Tarkash, TrikandYantar, Russia2012–2013
Third tranche (2)Tushil, TamalYantar, Russia2024, 2025
Indigenous tranche (2)Triput, TavasyaGoa Shipyard, IndiaExpected 2026–27

The first six frigates were purely imported. The final four were acquired under a hybrid model — two built in Russia with substantially higher Indian content, and two being built in India at Goa Shipyard Limited with Russian technology transfer.

Stealth Features

INS Tamal incorporates:

Weapon Systems

The Talwar class punches well above its weight for a 4,000-tonne platform. INS Tamal's fit includes:

Offensive Weapons

Sensors and Electronic Systems

Aviation

INS Tamal carries a single Kamov Ka-28 anti-submarine helicopter or Ka-31 airborne early warning helicopter, with hangar and flight deck aft. The Indian Navy is also progressively introducing the indigenous HAL Dhruv NUH (Naval Utility Helicopter).

Russia-India Defence Cooperation

INS Tamal is a living example of one of the world's longest-running defence partnerships:

Why INS Tamal Matters

1. Strengthens Blue-Water Capability

Tamal adds to the Indian Navy’s capacity to conduct sustained operations far from home ports — in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), Persian Gulf, and beyond.

2. Carrier Group Escort

As a multi-role frigate, she escorts and protects India's aircraft carrier groups (INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant) against air, surface, and sub-surface threats.

3. BrahMos Deployment at Sea

Equipping Talwar-class ships with BrahMos turns a primarily anti-submarine platform into a credible land-attack and anti-ship strike asset, extending India's reach.

4. Fills Near-Term Capability Gap

India's indigenous frigate and destroyer programmes (Project 17A — Nilgiri class, Project 15B — Visakhapatnam class) are progressing but take years to deliver each hull. The Russian-built frigates plug the gap until full indigenous production matches demand.

5. Signals Continuing Indo-Russian Partnership

Despite Western sanctions on Russia, India's commitment to complete the two-ship order and accept delivery on time signals strategic autonomy in defence procurement.
