The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line drawn roughly along the 180° meridian in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The IDL is a notional line — unlike the Prime Meridian, it has no legal or treaty basis. Each country may decide which side of the line to place itself on, which is why the IDL is not a straight line but bends around island nations and territories.
How the Date Changes
The Earth rotates from west to east, completing 360° in 24 hours — that is, 15° per hour. The Prime Meridian is the reference for time (UTC). Moving east of Greenwich, each 15° longitude is one hour ahead; moving west, each 15° is one hour behind.

Why the IDL Zigzags

The Kiribati Anomaly (1995)
Kiribati, a Pacific archipelago spread over 3.5 million sq km of ocean, used to straddle the IDL — its western Gilbert Islands were one day ahead of its eastern Line Islands. In 1995, Kiribati unilaterally shifted the IDL eastward by ~3,000 km, bringing all its territory onto the same date. This made Caroline Island (renamed Millennium Island) the easternmost point east of the IDL and the first inhabited land to see each new day — famously, the first to welcome 1 January 2000.
The Samoa Switch (2011)
Samoa shifted to the Asian side of the IDL on 30 December 2011 — skipping 30 December entirely and jumping from 29 December directly to 31 December. The reason was economic: Samoa's trade partners (New Zealand, Australia) were a day ahead, and the old timezone cost business days.
The Russia–Alaska Anomaly
The IDL bends sharply around the Bering Strait:
