Most people meet Indian classical music through a wall of vocabulary. Thaat, raga, aroha, avaroha, vadi, samvadi, jati, prahar. It reads like a foreign grammar, so the sensible reaction is to memorize a table and hope nobody asks a follow-up. Raga Bilawal is the best place to break that habit, because it’s the one raga where the theory has nowhere to hide. Bilawal uses all seven natural notes and nothing else. No flats, no sharps, no exceptions. If you’ve ever picked out a tune on the white keys of a piano and skipped every black one, you’ve already played the scale of Bilawal.

That’s not a cute coincidence, it’s the whole reason Bilawal sits where it does. What Raga Bilawal is, in one sentence

The seven notes, and the twelve hiding behind them

Indian music names seven notes, and every one is a nickname. The full names are Shadja, Rishabh, Gandhar, Madhyam, Pancham, Dhaivat, Nishad, shortened by everyone to Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni. Sing those in order and you’ve sung a saptak, an octave, exactly what a Western singer does with do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti.

Now the part that makes the rest click. Two of the seven never move. Sa and Pa are achal, fixed, and they’re the anchors: Sa is the tonic the singer chooses and the tanpura drones behind everything, Pa is its stable companion. The other five do move. Re, Ga, Dha and Ni each have a komal version, and Ma has a teevra version. Count them: seven natural, four komal, one teevra. Twelve in all, the same twelve on a piano octave, seven white keys and five black.

So a raga isn’t a mysterious substance. It’s a choice about which of those twelve you allow, in what order, with what emphasis. Bilawal’s choice is the simplest available: take the seven, leave the five alone. Fix this twelve-note map first, as the foundation of Indian classical music, and every raga afterwards becomes a variation you can locate rather than a name you memorize.

Thaat: Bhatkhande’s ten boxes, and why Bilawal is the first

A thaat is a parent scale used to file ragas, and there are ten in the system Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (1860 to 1936) built and every Indian music syllabus still uses. The ten are Bilawal, Khamaj, Kafi, Asavari, Bhairavi, Bhairav, Kalyan, Marwa, Poorvi and Todi. Bilawal is listed first, and not out of politeness. It’s first because it has zero alterations, so it’s the natural zero-point from which the other nine get measured.

Watch how cheaply they fall out once you hold Bilawal. Flatten Ni and you get Khamaj. Flatten Ga and Ni and you get Kafi. Flatten Ga, Dha and Ni and you get Asavari. Flatten Re, Ga, Dha and Ni and you get Bhairavi, everything flattened that can be. Sharpen Ma and leave the rest and you get Kalyan, the home of Yaman. That’s five of the ten in five sentences, and you needed one reference. That’s the whole secret of thaat theory, and it’s why starting anywhere else makes the system feel arbitrary.

Bhatkhande didn’t invent this from nothing. He adapted the melakarta idea from Carnatic music, traced to Venkatamakhin’s Chaturdandi Prakashika in the seventeenth century, which sorts scales into a mathematically complete set of 72 parents. Bhatkhande’s move was pragmatic rather than mathematical: he asked which parent scales Hindustani musicians actually used and landed on ten. So the ten-thaat system is a working librarian’s catalogue, not a theorem. Some ragas sit awkwardly, a few genuinely don’t fit. It survives because ten boxes you can hold in your head beat seventy-two you can’t.

And here’s the part that separates a good answer from a repeated one. Bilawal’s status as the unaltered reference scale is a fairly recent settlement, not an ancient given. In the older Indian theoretical tradition, the shuddha scale the texts treated as baseline corresponded much more closely to what we now call Kafi thaat, roughly Bilawal with a flattened Ga and Ni. The zero-point migrated over centuries of practice, and by Bhatkhande’s time Bilawal had become the accepted origin. So shuddha doesn’t mean pure in some eternal sense. It means the position the system currently treats as home.

Aroha, avaroha, vadi, samvadi: the grammar that turns a scale into a raga

Here’s the objection you’re already forming. If Bilawal is just the seven natural notes, and any number of ragas could use those same seven, what stops them all from being the same thing? A scale is a list. A raga is a set of rules about how you walk that list.

Aroha is the ascent, the notes you use going up. Avaroha is the descent. They’re often different, and the difference frequently identifies the raga. In Shuddha Bilawal both are complete: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa’ up, the reverse down. Because all seven appear both ways, its jati, the note-count classification, is Sampurna-Sampurna, sampurna meaning complete.

Vadi is the raga’s most important note, the one the singer keeps returning to and resting on. Samvadi is second, usually a fourth or fifth away, acting as counterweight. In Bilawal the vadi is Dha and the samvadi is Ga. Translate that into something you can hear: two singers could use identical notes and sound like they’re performing different pieces, simply because one keeps landing on Dha and the other on Ga. Same bricks, different building.

Then pakad, the catch-phrase, a short run that identifies the raga the way a few notes identify a film theme. For Alhaiya Bilawal it’s commonly given as Ga Re Ga Pa, Dha komal-Ni Dha Pa, Ma Ga Ma Re Sa. Notice the “Ga Re Ga” wobble at the start. A straight Sa-Re-Ga march would be a scale exercise. That little turn back is the raga announcing itself.

Alhaiya Bilawal: the one flat note that changes everything

Say “Bilawal” to a concert singer and nine times out of ten what they’ll perform is Alhaiya Bilawal. This trips up everyone who learns the theory from a table, because the table says Bilawal has no flats and the recording clearly has one.

Both statements are true, and the reconciliation is the most interesting thing about this raga. Alhaiya Bilawal borrows a komal Ni, a flattened seventh, allowed in exactly one place: coming down, in the phrase Dha komal-Ni Dha Pa. Going up, the Ni is always shuddha. So the raga carries both versions of the same note, natural in ascent and flattened in that single descending turn, which technically makes it a mishra, or mixed, raga rather than a pure one.

Why does one borrowed note matter this much? Because it’s the entire flavour. Without it you have a plain major scale, pleasant and slightly bland. With it, the descent takes an unexpected shadow right before it resolves, and that shadow is why people have sung Alhaiya Bilawal for centuries instead of using it as a warm-up. It also explains the jati: Alhaiya Bilawal drops Ma from the ascent, so it uses six notes up and seven down, making it Shadava-Sampurna. Shadava means six.

The name is murky, and it’s worth saying so rather than inventing a story. The usual account is that “Alhaiya” was once a separate melodic entity fused with Bilawal. The other offspring follow the same logic of borrowing: Yamani Bilawal imports the teevra Ma from Yaman, Nat Bilawal the assertive character of Nat, and Devgiri and Kukubh Bilawal take their own turns. The family is large because the parent scale is neutral enough to absorb almost anything.

Time and mood: why Bilawal belongs to the morning

Bilawal is a morning raga, assigned to the first prahar of the day, roughly 6 am to 9 am. Hindustani music splits twenty-four hours into eight prahars of three hours each and assigns ragas to them. Under Bhatkhande’s samay siddhanta, the time theory, singing a raga outside its hour counts as an error of taste, not a stylistic preference.

The rule that places Bilawal is worth knowing because it’s checkable rather than mystical. Bhatkhande split the octave into a lower half, poorvanga (Sa Re Ga Ma), and an upper half, uttaranga (Pa Dha Ni Sa’). Ragas whose vadi sits in the poorvanga are sung between noon and midnight; ragas whose vadi sits in the uttaranga are sung between midnight and noon. Bilawal’s vadi is Dha, which lives in the uttaranga. So Bilawal belongs to the midnight-to-noon half, and its all-natural notes place it after the dawn sandhi-prakash ragas like Bhairav that use a komal Re. Run the check yourself and the assignment stops being something you memorize.

The mood follows the structure. Bilawal is serene, joyful and devotional, unclouded rather than intense, which is what a scale with no altered notes should sound like. Nothing pulls against anything. That temperament is probably why Raag Bilaval is one of the thirty-one raags of the Guru Granth Sahib, where its compositions carry a settled, thanksgiving character. If your notes on the Bhakti movement treat devotional music as background, this is the connection worth making: the raga wasn’t picked for that repertoire by accident, it was picked because its emotional temperature matched.

Bilawal and Shankarabharanam: one scale, two systems

The Carnatic counterpart of Bilawal is Dheerasankarabharanam, usually shortened to Shankarabharanam, the 29th melakarta in the 72-parent scheme. Same seven natural notes, same intervals, same scale. Western musicians have their own name for it: the major scale, or Ionian mode, what you get playing C to C on the white keys. Three traditions, three names, one set of pitches. That convergence isn’t cultural borrowing, it’s arithmetic: this arrangement of intervals falls out of the simplest whole-number frequency ratios, so any music system that develops far enough tends to find it.

But identical notes are not identical music, and this is where a careless comparison goes wrong. Shankarabharanam is a janaka raga with a huge family of derived janya ragas and a vast composed repertoire, rendered with gamaka, the oscillating ornaments that are the spine of Carnatic style rather than added decoration. Bilawal moves and breathes differently, living inside the alap and khayal architecture of the north. Saying they’re “the same raga” is like saying two novels are the same because they use the same alphabet. The highest-return move is to stop reading and go listen, with one specific instruction. Find any recorded Alhaiya Bilawal and don’t try to follow the melody, that’s the mistake that makes people quit in the first minute. Listen only for the descent, and wait for the moment the singer comes down from Dha and touches a note a shade lower than you expected before settling on Pa. That’s the komal Ni. Once you catch it you’ll never lose it, and you’ve just heard a raga rule instead of reading one.

Then use Bilawal as your ruler. Every time you meet a new raga, ask one question: what did it change from Bilawal? Yaman sharpened Ma. Bhairavi flattened everything flattenable. Khamaj flattened just the Ni on the way down. Learn twelve ragas that way, as deviations from a scale you already own, and you’ll retain more than someone who learned thirty as independent facts.
