Every iPhone, every F-35 fighter jet, every electric car and every wind turbine contains tiny but indispensable quantities of rare earth elements (REEs). China controls roughly 60% of global production and 85% of refining capacity. When trade tensions rise, Beijing reminds the world of this leverage. India has the world’s fifth-largest REE reserves, yet imports most of its requirement from — you guessed it — China. That paradox is at the heart of India’s new Critical Minerals Mission 2024 and its revived interest in IREL (India) Limited.
For UPSC GS III, rare earths are a recurring theme under economy, science and technology, strategic minerals and international relations.
What are Rare Earth Metals
Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are a group of 17 metallic elements:
- 15 lanthanides (Lanthanum through Lutetium).
- Scandium (Sc) — similar chemistry.
- Yttrium (Y) — similar chemistry.
Despite the name, they are not particularly rare in the Earth's crust — the term refers to the fact that they rarely occur in concentrated deposits and are technically difficult to separate from ores and from each other.
Light vs Heavy REEs
- Light REEs (LREEs) — Lanthanum to Europium; relatively abundant.
- Heavy REEs (HREEs) — Gadolinium to Lutetium + Yttrium; rarer and strategically valuable.
Unique Properties and Uses
REEs have unique magnetic, luminescent, electrochemical and catalytic properties.
- Permanent magnets (Nd, Pr, Dy) — EV motors, wind turbines, headphones.
- Catalysts (Ce, La) — Petroleum refining, auto catalytic converters.
- Phosphors (Eu, Tb, Y) — LEDs, displays, fluorescent lamps.
