SPARSH Pension: Login, Annual Identification, Grievances and Service Centres

Updates

How defence pensioners use SPARSH: logging in, annual identification, data verification before sanction, grievances, free service centres and helplines.

If you served in the Army, Navy or Air Force, worked as a defence civilian, or draw a family pension after a soldier’s death, your pension now runs through one system. SPARSH pension is the Ministry of Defence’s end-to-end platform that sanctions defence pensions, pays them straight into your bank account and handles every correction and complaint after that. This page covers the jobs pensioners actually come to it for: logging in, finishing annual identification, checking data before sanction and getting a grievance resolved.

SPARSH stands for System for Pension Administration (Raksha). The Defence Accounts Department runs it through the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pensions) in Prayagraj, and the portal is sparsh.defencepension.gov.in. Most trouble pensioners face on it comes from two places: a mobile number the system doesn’t recognize, and data that moved across wrongly from the old system.

Before the steps, I want to make sure the basic idea is clear, because it explains why SPARSH asks you to check so much data.

What SPARSH Pension Is

SPARSH is a single digital system that does the whole pension cycle for defence pensioners: sanction, disbursement and revision. The old way worked like a relay race with too many runners. Three offices sanctioned pensions for the three services, and more than 45,000 bank branches, treasuries, post offices and the Indian Embassy in Nepal paid them, each holding its own copy of your data. SPARSH puts sanction and payment in one ledger, so a correction made once is the correction your bank account sees.

The key facts:

Pensions are one of the largest lines in the defence budget, which is why getting sanction and payment onto one platform mattered at this scale. SPARSH also follows the same logic as Direct Benefit Transfer: money goes straight to the pensioner’s account, with no intermediary deciding when.

Who Uses the SPARSH Portal

Every defence pensioner whose pension is sanctioned or paid through SPARSH uses the portal, whether or not they log in themselves. The main groups:

If you’re not sure whether you’re on SPARSH yet, the homepage has a public “Know Your SPARSH PPO and Identification Status” option that works without logging in.

Documents and Details You Need

Your SPARSH pension account runs on your registered mobile number more than on documents. Keep these ready before you start:

TaskWhat you need
First loginUsername (PEN ID) and the password sent by SMS to your registered mobile
Forgot usernamePersonal Number, GPF number, PRAN or Regimental Number, plus OTP
Digital annual identificationAadhaar, and a fingerprint scan or the Jeevan Pramaan face app
Manual annual identificationA Manual Life Certificate, used when Aadhaar isn’t available
Data verification before pensionSupporting documents for any correction you ask for
Update mobile, Aadhaar or PANThe new detail, through the links on the homepage

Keep scans of your Pension Payment Order and life certificate somewhere safe, such as DigiLocker. And if your name or date of birth in Aadhaar is wrong, fix it first through the Aadhaar update process, because digital identification checks against it.

How to Log In to SPARSH

The SPARSH login uses a username and password, not an OTP-only login. Your credentials arrive by SMS on the mobile number registered with SPARSH.

  1. Open sparsh.defencepension.gov.in and click Login.
  2. Enter the username and password sent to your registered mobile number.
  3. Type the captcha code shown on the screen and log in.
  4. If you’ve forgotten the password, use Forgot Password, enter your username and the OTP sent to your registered mobile, and set a new password.
  5. If the account is locked, use Unlock Account. The default password is sent again to your registered mobile number or email.

If the portal says your mobile number isn’t registered with SPARSH, use the “To Update Mobile No.” link on the homepage or visit a SPARSH Service Centre. Nothing else works until that number is right.

How to Complete Annual Identification

Every pensioner has to identify themselves once a year to keep the SPARSH pension flowing. SPARSH offers two routes: a digital life certificate through Aadhaar, or a manual life certificate for those without Aadhaar.

  1. Log in and open Life Certificate / Identification.
  2. Choose Digital Life Certificate if you have Aadhaar, or Manual Life Certificate if you don’t.
  3. For the digital route, authenticate with a fingerprint device or with the Jeevan Pramaan face app, which the portal accepts for identification.
  4. For the manual route, submit the life certificate as the portal directs.
  5. Check that the identification shows as complete. You can also check it from the homepage’s “To Know Identification Status” link without logging in.

A notice on the portal flags that older L0 fingerprint devices are being phased out. If a centre’s scanner keeps failing, ask whether it’s a newer device, or use the face app instead.

The digital route is now the norm. During the national Digital Life Certificate 4.0 campaign in November 2025, 20.94 lakh digital life certificates were generated for defence pensioners, the highest of any department.

How to Verify Your Data Before Pension

New retirees see a step called Pensioner Data Verification (PDV). It means checking the service data sent by your Record Office and Pay Account Office before your Pension Payment Order is generated. What PDV verifies is what you’ll be paid on, so this is the one screen worth reading slowly.

  1. Log in with the Pensioner ID assigned to you when the claim was initiated.
  2. Open Pensioner Data Verification and go through every field.
  3. Flag any wrong field and attach supporting documents for the correction.
  4. Submit the undertakings and declarations the screen asks for.
  5. Track the claim through Track Pension Claim.

The deadline is strict. You must complete PDV within 15 days of the notification, or the system treats the data as verified on its own. Corrections you request go to the Record Office for approval.

How to Raise and Escalate a Grievance

Grievances go through the Grievance menu after login, where you can raise, track and escalate a complaint. You can also register one without logging in, from the homepage.

  1. Log in and open Grievance, then Raise Grievance.
  2. Choose the category, describe the problem and attach documents.
  3. Note the grievance number and follow it under Track Grievance.
  4. If it isn’t resolved, use Escalate Grievance.

For the no-login route, the homepage asks whether you’re a paid pensioner, whether you have a PEN ID and whether your pension is sanctioned. It then takes your Personal Number, GPF, PRAN or Regimental Number and an OTP, and sends login credentials to your registered mobile so you can file the grievance.

Resolution has become faster. Average grievance redressal time fell from 56 days in April 2025 to 17 days in November 2025. For pensioners in remote areas, the department also holds SPARSH Outreach Programmes and Raksha Pension Samadhan Ayojans. 284 outreach programmes and 194 RPSAs had been held by December 2025, and more than 8,000 grievances were settled on the spot during that financial year.

SPARSH Service Centres

A SPARSH Service Centre (SSC) is an office or counter where someone helps you do SPARSH tasks in person. The portal states that services at CSCs, banks, India Post Payments Bank and departmental SSCs are totally free of cost.

What you can do at an SSC:

The network is wide:

Type of centreNumber
Defence Accounts Department offices202
Common Service Centres4.63 lakh
Bank branches working as SSCs5,200+
Partner banks in the Digital Life Certificate 4.0 campaign15

To find one, use the Service Center Locator on the portal, or the CSC locator at https://locator.csccloud.in/ for the nearest Common Service Centre. The Indian Army’s Project NAMAN adds CSCs dedicated to veterans, pensioners, war widows and next of kin. 14 opened in its first phase in August 2024, with about 200 planned.

Fees and Timelines

The timelines that matter for a SPARSH pension are few, and the services themselves are free.

Common Errors and Fixes

These are the problems that come up again and again:

Helpline and Contacts

For anything SPARSH can’t settle online, use the official channels:

The pension office has also issued fraud warnings. It has not authorized any person or agency to resolve pension matters for a fee, it doesn’t run any WhatsApp group, and it has warned about attempts to exploit retired defence personnel for espionage. Anyone who offers to “speed up” your pension for money is not from the office.

What SPARSH Can’t Do

SPARSH is a pension administration system, and it has clear limits:

The offline fallback is a SPARSH Service Centre, a Defence Accounts Department office or a Raksha Pension Samadhan Ayojan near you.

If you do one thing for your SPARSH pension after reading this, check that your registered mobile number is correct and that this year’s identification shows as complete. Almost every other SPARSH problem is easier to solve once those two are in order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SPARSH pension?

SPARSH, the System for Pension Administration (Raksha), is the Ministry of Defence platform that sanctions, pays and revises pensions for Army, Navy and Air Force pensioners and Defence civilians. It was launched in October 2020 and is run by PCDA (Pensions), Prayagraj.

How do I log in to SPARSH for the first time?

Open sparsh.defencepension.gov.in and click Login. Enter the username and password sent by SMS to your registered mobile number, type the captcha and log in. If you forget the password, use Forgot Password with your username and an OTP.

What is the SPARSH toll-free number?

The PCDA (Pension) toll-free call centre number is 1800-180-5325. Official calls from the office come only from 0532-2800154, so treat calls from any other number claiming to be the pension office with caution.

Do SPARSH Service Centres charge any fee?

No. The portal states that services at CSCs, banks, India Post Payments Bank and departmental SPARSH Service Centres are totally free of cost to pensioners.

How can I check my SPARSH identification status?

Use the Know Your SPARSH PPO and Identification Status option on the SPARSH homepage. It works without logging in. After login, the Life Certificate or Identification menu also shows the status.

What happens if I do not complete PDV within 15 days?

If Pensioner Data Verification is not completed within 15 days of the notification, the system treats the data as verified on its own. Any wrong detail then has to be corrected later through a service request or grievance.
