UPSC Age Relaxation 2026: OBC, SC/ST, PwBD & EWS Rules

UPSC age relaxation in the Civil Services Examination 2026 is three years for eligible OBC candidates, five years for SC/ST candidates, and ten years for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. General and EWS candidates have the same 21-to-32 age window and six-attempt limit.

The 2026 notice uses 1 August 2026 as the cut-off. A General or EWS candidate must have been born from 2 August 1994 through 1 August 2005. OBC candidates can receive nine attempts, SC/ST candidates unlimited attempts within their age limit, and PwBD candidates nine or unlimited attempts depending on the underlying category.

Read the official UPSC CSE 2026 notification before applying. The current notice does not list the old Jammu and Kashmir domicile concession that appeared in earlier examination cycles.

General Category Age Limit: The Baseline

The General (Unreserved) category age limit is the strictest. You must be at least 21 and not more than 32 years old as of August 1, 2026, to appear in UPSC CSE 2026.

This means a candidate born between August 2, 1994 and August 1, 2005 is eligible for UPSC CSE 2026.

The attempt limit for General category is 6. You can use all 6 attempts between ages 21 and 32. The attempt cap typically binds before the age ceiling — a candidate who starts at 21 and attempts every year exhausts 6 attempts by age 26, with 6 years of age eligibility still remaining but no attempts left.

EWS Category: Same as General

EWS (Economically Weaker Section), introduced through the 103rd Constitutional Amendment in 2019, gives 10% reservation in vacancies to candidates from economically weaker General category families (annual family income below ₹8 lakh from all sources).

EWS candidates share the same age limit and attempt count as General category: 32 years maximum age, 6 attempts. The only benefit is the 10% seat reservation — no additional age relaxation.

OBC Age Limit: +3 Years, 9 Attempts

OBC (Other Backward Classes) non-creamy layer candidates get:

• Upper age limit: 35 years (General 32 + 3-year relaxation)
• Attempts: 9 (General 6 + 3 extra attempts)

The OBC non-creamy layer threshold is a family income of ₹8 lakh per annum from all sources excluding agricultural income. If your family income exceeds ₹8 lakh, you're classified as OBC creamy layer and treated as General category for UPSC purposes — 32 years, 6 attempts.

OBC candidates must produce a valid OBC non-creamy layer certificate issued by a competent authority. The certificate must specifically state "non-creamy layer" — a general OBC certificate without this mention doesn't qualify for the relaxation.

For OBC candidates starting at 21, the 9-attempt cap is rarely the binding constraint. With attempts available annually from 21 to 34 (14 years, 14 possible slots), the age ceiling at 35 usually limits before attempt count runs out.

SC/ST Age Limit: +5 Years, Unlimited Attempts

SC (Scheduled Caste) and ST (Scheduled Tribe) candidates get the most generous terms:

• Upper age limit: 37 years (General 32 + 5-year relaxation)
• Attempts: Unlimited

But "unlimited" doesn't mean infinite. SC/ST candidates can appear in UPSC CSE every year they remain age-eligible. From 21 to 37, that's a maximum of 16 annual attempts. Once they cross 37, no more attempts — regardless of how many they've taken.

The caste certificate must be issued by a competent authority (typically a tehsildar or above) and must clearly identify the candidate as belonging to a caste notified under the SC/ST list for their state.

PwBD: +10 Years Over Category Limit

Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) — those with at least 40% disability as certified under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016 — get an additional 10 years on top of their category age limit:

Eligible disabilities include: visual impairment, hearing impairment, locomotor disability, cerebral palsy, multiple disabilities, and other conditions specified in the RPwD Act 2016. The disability certificate must be issued by a Medical Board of a Central or State Government Hospital.

How to Calculate Your Eligibility

Step 1: Identify your category and find the applicable maximum age from the table.

Step 2: Take August 1, 2026 as the reference date.

Step 3: You must not have crossed the maximum age on or before August 1, 2026.

Example:

• Candidate: OBC (non-creamy layer)
• Date of birth: September 15, 1990
• Age on August 1, 2026: 35 years, 10 months and 16 days
• Maximum age for OBC: 35 years
• Result: Ineligible — crossed 35 years before August 1, 2026

Another example:

• Candidate: General category
• Date of birth: August 1, 1994
• Age on August 1, 2026: exactly 32 years
• Maximum age for General: 32 years
• Result: Eligible — "not more than 32 years" means exactly 32 is allowed

Use the date-of-birth window printed in the notification rather than interpreting the age phrase informally. For CSE 2026, a General or EWS candidate born on 2 August 1994 is eligible; one born on 1 August 1994 is not.

Age Relaxation for Defence Personnel and Ex-Servicemen

• Defence Services Personnel disabled in operations: up to three years.
• Eligible ex-servicemen, ECOs and SSCOs: up to five years, subject to the service and release conditions in the notice.
• Cumulative relaxation: eligible SC, ST or OBC candidates who also qualify as ex-servicemen or PwBD may combine the applicable relaxations.

Age relaxation does not automatically add attempts. Attempt limits continue to follow the candidate’s category: six for General/EWS, nine for OBC, and unlimited for SC/ST, with the separate PwBD rules stated in the notice.

Why the Age Limit Matters More Than Attempt Count

For General category aspirants, the attempt cap (6) is the primary constraint. But for OBC and especially SC/ST candidates, the age ceiling is the real limiting factor.

An SC candidate who starts preparing at 25 and takes 1 attempt per year has:

• 37 – 25 = 12 years of age eligibility
• Unlimited attempts

They can attempt 12 times from 25 to 36 (inclusive). But if they waste these 12 attempts without a serious preparation strategy, the window closes permanently at 37. The "unlimited attempts" label can create false comfort — time still runs out.
