What you can update online vs at a centre

The myAadhaar portal handles a limited but useful set of changes. Everything else goes through an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre. Knowing which is which saves you a wasted trip.

The rule of thumb: anything that needs your physical presence — a new photo, fresh fingerprints, mobile-number verification — cannot be done from home. Address and document proof, which only need paperwork, can.

The free document update window — verified

UIDAI first made online document updates free in 2023 and has extended the window several times. The current position, formalised through an official memorandum dated 13 May 2026: the free online document update runs from 15 June 2026 to 14 June 2027 on the myAadhaar portal (UIDAI; reported by Outlook Money). It covers uploading fresh proof of identity (PoI) and proof of address (PoA) against your existing details.

Two caveats. First, the waiver applies only online — the same document update at a physical centre costs ₹75. Second, UIDAI specifically urges people whose Aadhaar was issued more than 10 years ago and never updated to use this window, because stale records increasingly cause failures in bank eKYC and scheme verification (schemes such as PM-Kisan pay only into Aadhaar-seeded, correctly matched accounts, and DBT schemes routinely require Aadhaar eKYC to release instalments).

How to update your address online

You need a valid proof-of-address document in your name (JPEG, PNG, or PDF, under 2 MB) and your Aadhaar-linked mobile for OTPs.

1. Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and click Login.
2. Enter your Aadhaar number, the captcha, and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
3. Select Address Update, then Update Aadhaar Online.
4. Read the guidelines, click Proceed to Update Aadhaar, and select Address.
5. Type the new address exactly as it appears on your proof document.
6. Upload the scanned proof of address.
7. Review the preview carefully — spelling, house number, PIN code.
8. Submit. Pay the fee if one applies to your request type; you get a 14-digit Service Request Number (SRN) on screen and by SMS.

UIDAI verifies the document, and the update normally reflects within a few days to a couple of weeks. Once approved, download the updated e-Aadhaar PDF from the same portal.

How to do the free document update

If your details are already correct and you just need to refresh the documents on record:

1. Log in to myAadhaar as above.
2. Choose Document Update.
3. Confirm your existing demographic details are correct.
4. Upload one proof of identity and one proof of address from the accepted list (passport, ration card, voter ID, driving licence, bank passbook, and others listed on the portal).
5. Submit and note the SRN.

That is the entire process — no fee, no visit, till 14 June 2027.

What needs a centre visit, and what it costs

For name, date of birth, mobile, email, photo, or biometric changes, book an appointment (bookable through myAadhaar) or walk into an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Carry original supporting documents; they are scanned and returned. The current fees, effective 1 October 2025 under UIDAI’s revised schedule:

These rates are scheduled to hold until 30 September 2028. Note the limits that apply across your Aadhaar lifetime: name can be changed twice, date of birth once, and gender once. Anything beyond that needs an exception process through UIDAI’s regional office.

How to check update status

1. Open myAadhaar and click Check Aadhaar Update Status (login not required for this).
2. Enter your SRN (for online requests) or the URN/EID from your centre acknowledgement slip.
3. Enter the captcha and submit.

Common problems and fixes

• OTP not received. Only the Aadhaar-registered mobile gets OTPs. If your registered number is dead, no online route exists — visit a centre to update the mobile first (₹75).
• Document rejected. Upload documents in your own name, current, and from the accepted list. A rent agreement must be registered; utility bills should be recent.
