Agritech and Farm Technology in India (UPSC Economy)

Indian agriculture is in the middle of a digital transformation. Over 1,300 agritech start-ups operate across crop advisory, precision farming, marketplaces, fintech, drones, and supply-chain logistics. The Indian agritech market is projected to cross USD 24 billion by 2025 from about USD 5 billion in 2020 (Bain & Company estimates). The government’s Digital Agriculture Mission (2024), AgriStack, and drone push are setting the foundational infrastructure. For UPSC, agritech and e-technology in agriculture are explicitly named in the GS-III syllabus and are a reliable Mains theme.

What Is Agritech?

Agritech (agricultural technology) applies digital, biological, and engineering innovations to farming, horticulture, aquaculture, and livestock to improve yield, efficiency, and profitability. It spans:

Categories of Agritech (NASSCOM Framework)

Access to Inputs

E-commerce and mobile apps deliver agri-inputs — seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, equipment — to farmers' doorsteps. Platforms like BharatRohan, Agrevolution (DeHaat), AgroStar, BigHaat advise farmers on best inputs for their crop and agro-climate.

Mechanisation as a Service

Uber-like apps such as Goldfarm and EM3 Agri Services rent out tractors, tillers, and harvesters. These Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs) bring mechanisation to small and marginal farmers who cannot afford ownership.

Finance and Insurance

JaiKisan, Samunnati, Rupeek, CropIn offer crop loans, equipment finance, and weather-indexed insurance. They use cash-flow-based underwriting (not asset-based) suited to small farmers.

Resource Maximisation via IoT

Fasal and CropIn deploy IoT sensors and AI to optimise water, fertiliser, and pesticide application. Sensors monitor soil moisture, humidity, canopy temperature, and crop stage in real time.

Precision Agriculture

NITI Aayog‘s Precision Agriculture pilot with Microsoft uses AI for crop productivity. Commercial players use satellite imagery and drone mapping for field-level advisory.

Agricultural Marketplaces

Ninjacart, WayCool, DeHaat, Samunnati connect farmers directly with retailers, restaurants, and consumers — cutting out multiple intermediaries.

Animal Husbandry and Aquaculture Tech

Stellapps (dairy IoT), Aquaconnect (shrimp), Mooofarm (cattle) digitise livestock productivity and disease management.

Government Push: From Schemes to Infrastructure

Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM)

Subsidies for tractors, tillers, harvesters, and Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs).

Drone Push

Kisan Sarathi / Kisan Suvidha / mKisan

Mobile apps and SMS-based advisories on crops, weather, and prices.

Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)

731 KVKs deliver farmer training, on-farm demonstrations, and climate-smart advisory.

Digital Agriculture Mission (2024)

Approved by the Cabinet in September 2024 with outlay of about Rs 2,817 crore, the Mission creates the AgriStack digital infrastructure:
