Notice what is not on the list: rewriting the introduction halfway, hunting for the perfect quote, fancy diagrams, decorative underlining. None of that earns marks. Discipline does.
What to add — and what to avoid at all costs
The essay paper rewards what most aspirants under-do and punishes what most aspirants over-do. Memorise this list before you walk into the hall.
Add liberally
- One precise thesis, stated by the end of paragraph two and not abandoned. “Doubt joined to method is science; doubt cut loose from method is paranoia — the true man of Science is the one who has learned the difference.”
- Concrete examples across three or four domains — one from history of science (Copernicus, Galileo, Wegener), one Indian (Nasadiya Sukta, the Buddha’s Kalama Sutta, C. V. Raman repeating Lord Rayleigh’s experiment on the sea), one philosophical (Popper, Kuhn, the Cartesian doubt), one contemporary (RCTs in welfare policy, the COVID-era reversals on masks and aerosols).
- Two or three short, named quotes — Bernard’s own line at the head, Feynman on “the first principle is that you must not fool yourself”, Tagore on the freedom of mind. One per major section is enough.
- One Indian philosophical anchor. The Nasadiya Sukta’s “who knows truly?”, the Buddha’s instruction to the Kalamas, anekantavada, the Nyaya school’s insistence on inference. An Indian doubter in an essay full of European scientists is a mark-pulling move.
- Counter-arguments handled briefly. “It might be argued that constant doubt paralyses action…” — then resolved in two lines. Acknowledging the other side earns more marks than ignoring it.
- A clean conclusion that returns to the opening image — the laboratory bench, the notebook, the experiment that refuses to confirm what its author wished it would.
Avoid — even when tempted
- Restating the topic in the first sentence. “The doubter is a true man of Science — a profound statement…” signals that you have nothing to add. Open with an image: Bernard at the bench, Galileo before the tribunal, the Kalama villagers asking the Buddha which teacher to trust.
- A pure history-of-science essay. A 1,100-word parade from Copernicus to CERN looks like a Class 10 chapter. Range across philosophy, India and policy too.
- Unsourced statistics. “Over 60% of published findings fail to replicate” — if you cannot name the discipline or the survey, do not write the number. Examiners cross-mark this.
- Naming current politicians or current ruling-party leaders. The essay paper is graded by humans across the ideological spectrum. Use the institution — Parliament, the courts, ICMR, the Election Commission — not the personality.
- Decorative scholar-dropping. Citing Popper, Kuhn, Feyerabend and Lakatos in one paragraph to look serious. Examiners spot performance citations instantly. One philosopher, used well, beats four named in passing.
- Romanticising doubt. “We must doubt everything always” reads like an undergraduate manifesto. The essay paper rewards examination, not exhortation. Doubt has costs as well as virtues.

How to make an examiner stop and read
An essay examiner reads several hundred scripts in a sitting. The first paragraph decides whether they read the second with attention or with autopilot. Four small habits separate the essays that get attention from the ones that get skimmed.

The Nasadiya Sukta of the Rigveda — perhaps the oldest surviving fragment of philosophical doubt anywhere — asks of creation itself, “who knows truly?”, and ends with the suggestion that perhaps even the gods are uncertain. The Buddha, addressing the people of Kalama, told them not to believe a teaching merely because scripture said it or elders affirmed it, but to test it against experience and reason. The Nyaya school built an entire epistemology on rules of valid inference. Centuries later, a young C. V. Raman repeated Lord Rayleigh’s experiment on why the sea is blue, refused the European answer, and won India its first science Nobel. The Indian doubter is older than the European scientist; they are kin.
This kinship carries a price. Doubting publicly is costly long before it is rewarded. Galileo lived his last years under house arrest. Ignaz Semmelweis, who insisted that childbed fever was being spread by physicians’ unwashed hands, was driven from his profession and died in an asylum, vindicated only posthumously. Whistleblowers in modern research labs still lose careers more often than they win medals. The scientist’s doubt is a moral as well as an intellectual act.
Doubt is now built into more than laboratories. Modern governance, at its best, is institutional scepticism. A pilot programme is doubt before scale. A randomised controlled trial of a cash-transfer scheme is doubt before national roll-out. Judicial review is doubt of the executive’s claims. The Comptroller and Auditor General is doubt of the public account. India’s welfare experiments — from MGNREGA evaluations to Direct Benefit Transfer pilots — succeed to the degree that they treat their first design as a hypothesis rather than a conclusion.
And yet doubt has a dark twin the essay cannot ignore. The same posture that makes science possible can be hired to obstruct it. It might be objected that constant doubt paralyses action — that a society waiting for every uncertainty to be resolved would never build a bridge or pass a law. The objection is right about constant doubt and wrong about science. Science does not demand paralysis; it demands provisional confidence — acting on the best available evidence while remaining ready to revise. The policymaker who follows the data on aerosol transmission and updates her mask guidance is not weak; she is doing what Bernard would have done in her place.
For the individual, this points to small disciplines: reading the source before sharing the headline, steel-manning the other side before refuting it, distinguishing what you know from what you have only heard, the rare courage to say in public that you have changed your mind. None of these is dramatic. All of them are the everyday practice of the scientific temperament Bernard described.
For institutions, the list is longer and more urgent. A protected peer-review system. Independent regulators insulated from the industries they regulate. Open data and pre-registered studies that make hidden adjustment harder. A judiciary willing to ask the executive how it knows what it claims to know. And, most important, a school curriculum that teaches not only the conclusions of science but the method by which those conclusions were reached, and the doubt that authored them.
Return for a moment to the laboratory on the Rue des Écoles. The bench is empty; the notebook closed for over a century. But the discipline it taught is no antique. Every honest experimenter, every careful judge, every regulator who refuses to be flattered, every citizen who reads past the headline, is keeping that bench in use. The doubter, properly understood, is not the cynic who believes nothing. The doubter is the one who has resolved to believe only what evidence can carry — and is therefore, in Bernard’s exact and demanding sense, a true man of Science.

Do not memorise it. Memorised essays read like memorised essays, and examiners spot them in two paragraphs. Use the model the way a chess student uses a master game: study the opening move, the pivot, the way each paragraph hands the reader to the next, the placement of the Indian anchor, the way the counter-argument is brought up and then closed. Then take a related abstract topic — try “Forests are the best case studies for economic excellence” or “Edifice of science rests on the foundation of doubt” — and write your own essay using the same blueprint.
