UPSC Essay Writing Course

Build a clear argument, choose relevant examples and revise your writing with purpose. Ask about current essay coaching and evaluation options, or begin with the practice resources below.

An essay needs an argument, not a pile of facts

Understand the theme

Define the important words and the relationship between them. Decide what the essay is asking you to examine.

Build a coherent structure

Give each section a job: explain, illustrate, challenge or qualify the central argument.

Revise for clarity

Remove examples that do not advance your point. Strengthen the links between paragraphs and bring the conclusion back to the theme.

WORKED PRACTICE EXAMPLE

Convenience and responsibility in digital life

A practice theme, followed by one possible opening and a way to develop it.

A service can become easier to use without becoming fairer to everyone. A digital application may save a connected citizen a journey while leaving another person dependent on help to complete the same task. The test of convenience is therefore not only the time it saves, but whose needs it includes. Responsibility begins when design accounts for both.

01

Opening: establish the tension

The example moves from a familiar situation to the distinction between convenience and inclusion. It avoids beginning with a sweeping claim about all technology.

02

Develop: connect design with institutions

Discuss accessibility, informed consent, privacy and a practical route for people who cannot complete a digital process. Use verified examples rather than invented statistics.

03

Counterpoint: recognise the benefits

Convenient services can reduce time, cost and avoidable discretion. A balanced argument asks how to retain those gains while addressing exclusion.

04

Conclude: return to the central test

Judge an innovation by both ease of access and responsibility towards people affected by it. End with a principle grounded in the argument you have developed.

A repeatable writing cycle

Define the theme, choose your position and arrange three or four connected dimensions.
