Latitudes and longitudes form the geographic coordinate system that locates every point on Earth. Latitude lines run east-west (measuring north-south position), while longitude lines run north-south (measuring east-west position). For UPSC, specific lines of latitude and longitude carry immense significance — the Equator, Tropics, Arctic and Antarctic Circles, Prime Meridian, and International Date Line appear in Prelims and form the basis for understanding climate zones, time zones, and geopolitics.

The Equator (0°)

The Equator divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. It's the only latitude that is a great circle (same circumference as the Earth — about 40,075 km).

Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N)

Arctic Circle (66.5°N)

Prime Meridian (0°)

The Prime Meridian passes through the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, London. It was established as the global reference line for longitude at the International Meridian Conference in Washington, D.C. (1884).

Indian Standard Time Meridian (82.5°E)

Special Lines and Their Significance

Horse Latitudes (30°N and 30°S)

Subtropical high-pressure belts where air descends after rising at the Equator. Historically, ships carrying horses were becalmed here, leading to the name. These latitudes correspond to the world's great deserts — Sahara, Arabian, Thar, Kalahari, Australian.

Doldrums (ITCZ — near 0°)

The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone near the Equator where trade winds from both hemispheres meet. Characterised by low pressure, rising air, calm winds, and heavy rainfall. The ITCZ migrates seasonally — its position over India during summer triggers the monsoon.

These wind belts exist because the Southern Hemisphere has far less landmass to slow wind circulation compared to the Northern Hemisphere.

The Earth is divided into 24 time zones, each spanning 15° of longitude (360° ÷ 24 hours = 15° per hour).

Longitude and Local Time

Local solar noon occurs when the Sun is at its highest point. For every 1° of longitude east of a reference meridian, local time is 4 minutes ahead. For every 1° west, it's 4 minutes behind.

Example: Arunachal Pradesh (97°E) is 14.5° east of India's standard meridian (82.5°E). Solar time there is approximately 58 minutes ahead of IST — yet the clock reads the same. This is why Arunachal Pradesh experiences sunrise nearly an hour before Saurashtra in Gujarat.

The Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N) passes through eight Indian states from west to east: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, and Mizoram. Why does India have only one time zone?

India adopted a single time zone (IST, UTC +5:30 based on 82.5°E) for administrative convenience and national unity. However, this creates a nearly 2-hour solar time difference between Gujarat in the west and Arunachal Pradesh in the east. Proposals for dual time zones (IST-I and IST-II) have been discussed but not implemented.

What are the Horse Latitudes?

The Horse Latitudes are subtropical high-pressure belts at approximately 30°N and 30°S. Descending air creates calm conditions with minimal wind and low rainfall. The world's major hot deserts — Sahara, Thar, Arabian, Kalahari — are located at these latitudes. The name allegedly comes from ships dumping horses overboard when becalmed.
