UPSC guide to nanotechnology: principles, applications in agriculture, health, energy, defence, ethics and India's Nano Mission.

Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter at scales of 1 to 100 nanometres (a nanometre is one-billionth of a metre). At this scale, materials exhibit quantum and surface-effect properties that differ from their bulk behaviour — making nanotech a general-purpose frontier with applications across health, agriculture, energy, electronics and defence. For UPSC, nanotechnology appears under GS Paper III — Science & Technology, with spillovers into the Economy, Health and Environment sections.

The science — why "nano" matters

At the nanoscale:

GS Paper II — Governance

GS Paper IV — Ethics

Prelims pointers — Nano Mission year (2007), FSSAI 2022 nano guidelines, Nano Urea launch (2021), IS/ISO 80004, carbon nanotube, graphene, quantum dot.

Interview probes — nano urea efficacy debates; nanotoxicity regulations; India's strategy to move from papers to products.

Nanotechnology is the enabling layer beneath most 21st-century tech — chips, clean energy, precision medicine, climate-resilient agriculture. Continuing India's strong research base while closing the manufacturing-regulation loop is the real challenge.
