What Is a Nuclear Triad?
The nuclear triad comprises three complementary delivery platforms:
- Strategic bombers — air-launched nuclear weapons.
- Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) — long-range land-based missiles launched from silos, road-mobile launchers, or rail-mobile launchers.
- Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs) — sea-based weapons on nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs).
The triad significantly reduces the probability that an adversary could destroy all delivery platforms in a surprise first strike, and therefore strengthens second-strike capability — the core of credible deterrence.

India's Nuclear Doctrine (2003 Summary)
