PAN Card Correction Online: Name, DOB and Photo Update
Correct your PAN card online via Protean or UTIITSL: steps, current fees, documents for name, DOB and photo changes, and Aadhaar mismatch fixes.
PAN card correction is done online through the same two providers that issue PAN cards — Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) or UTIITSL — using the change/correction request flow. You tick only the fields that need fixing (name, date of birth, photo, signature, father’s name, or address), upload proof for each change, pay ₹72–₹107, and receive a corrected e-PAN in about 2–3 days with the physical card following by post. Your PAN number itself never changes — a correction updates the details printed against it.
Where to apply: Protean or UTIITSL?
Flip your PAN card over. The back names the printer — either Protean/NSDL or UTIITSL. Corrections go through fastest on the provider that issued your card, though both can legally process a change request for any PAN.
- Protean: choose “Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data” on the Protean PAN portal (linked from the Income Tax Department’s services page).
- UTIITSL: choose “Change/Correction in PAN Card” on pan.utiitsl.com.
One form change to know: from 1 April 2026, the old combined “Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN Data” form was replaced under the Income-tax Act 2025 with new correction forms (PAN CR-01 for individuals), per Protean’s notification. Online, the portal simply serves you the current form — the name matters only for paper applications.
Step-by-step: correcting PAN details online
- Open the change/correction service on Protean or UTIITSL and select the applicant type (individual, in most cases).
- Enter your existing PAN, name, date of birth, and contact details. This creates a token/reference number — save it; it lets you resume a half-done form.
- Choose the submission mode. Paperless e-KYC with Aadhaar OTP is the easiest: your Aadhaar demographic data is used directly and there is nothing to print or post. The alternatives are scanned-upload with e-sign, or printing and posting the signed form.
- On the correction screen, tick the checkbox next to each field you want changed and enter the correct value. Untouched fields stay as they are. This checkbox step is where most rejections originate — an unticked field will not be updated even if you typed a new value.
- Upload the proof document for every ticked field (see the table below), plus standard identity and address proof.
- Choose physical card + e-PAN or e-PAN only, pay the fee, and authenticate with Aadhaar OTP or e-sign.
- Note the acknowledgement number for tracking.
The corrected e-PAN typically arrives by email within 48–72 hours of verification; the reprinted card takes roughly two weeks to an Indian address.

The fee is the same regardless of how many fields you correct in one application — so fix everything at once rather than filing serial requests. Fully paperless applications get a small discount that shows on the payment screen.
Fixing PAN–Aadhaar mismatch problems
The most common trigger for a correction today is a failed PAN–Aadhaar link: the linking fails when the name or date of birth differs between the two databases. You have two directions to fix it, and choosing the right one saves weeks:
- If Aadhaar is correct and PAN is wrong → file the PAN correction described above using Aadhaar e-KYC mode. The PAN record adopts Aadhaar’s spelling and DOB, after which linking goes through.
- If PAN is correct and Aadhaar is wrong → update Aadhaar instead, online via the myAadhaar self-service update (for address/limited demographic fields) or at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra for name and DOB changes, then retry linking.
Rule of thumb: fix whichever document is actually wrong, not whichever is cheaper to change — every bank and KYC record downstream keys off these two.
Remember that linking itself, if you missed the original deadlines, carries a late fee of ₹1,000 paid on the e-filing portal before the link request. An unlinked PAN becomes inoperative — refunds freeze and higher TDS applies — so the correction plus link is worth completing promptly. Tracking your correction request
- Protean: “Know Status of Your Application” with the 15-digit acknowledgement number.
- UTIITSL: “Track PAN Card” with your application/coupon number and date of birth.
- The corrected e-PAN download link arrives on your registered email; downloads are free for 30 days after issuance, then a nominal ~₹8 charge applies.
Once corrected, pull the fresh e-PAN into DigiLocker so every future KYC uses the updated version, and update linked records — bank, demat, EPF, and GST portal registration if you have one — since those don’t refresh automatically.
