Objectives of Project Elephant

33 Elephant Reserves Across India

The Southern India population (Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu) is the largest contiguous population, numbering over 14,000 elephants in the Nilgiri-Mysore-Wayanad landscape. This region also has the highest corridor density.
Elephant Corridors: 101 Identified, Few Protected
The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) has identified 101 elephant corridors across India. These are narrow strips of habitat connecting larger elephant ranges, essential for seasonal migration, feeding, and genetic exchange.

Why Corridors Matter

Mining (coal, iron ore, limestone) in Central and Eastern India directly destroys elephant habitat. Singrauli, Korba, and Jharia coalfields overlap with elephant ranges.
Linear infrastructure (national highways, power lines) fragments corridors. Highway widening projects rarely incorporate wildlife underpasses or overpasses.
Electrocution from illegal electric fences and sagging power lines kills dozens of elephants annually. Power lines through forest areas are a persistent problem.
Poaching for ivory continues despite the 1989 international ivory ban. Male Asian elephants (tuskers) are targeted, skewing sex ratios in some populations.
Mitigation Measures
Several innovative approaches are being deployed:
Bee fences exploit elephants' natural fear of bees. Beehives strung along farm boundaries deter elephant crop raids. This approach, pioneered in Africa, has been successfully adapted in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Early warning systems using SMS alerts, thermal cameras, and AI-based detection notify communities when elephant herds approach settlements.
Wildlife underpasses and overpasses on highways and railway tracks allow safe crossing. The Rajaji-Corbett corridor has several underpasses. Speed restrictions on trains through elephant corridors (30 km/h at night) have reduced railway kills.
Crop compensation schemes reimburse farmers for elephant damage, though delays and inadequate amounts remain complaints.
Solar-powered fences (non-lethal, low voltage) create managed boundaries around settlements while keeping corridors open.

Asian vs. African Elephant: Key Differences
