The ocean is the climate’s shock absorber. It has soaked up over 90% of the extra heat trapped by greenhouse gases and nearly 30% of anthropogenic CO2. That service is now coming at a cost — warming seas, acidifying chemistry, de-oxygenating waters, rising coastlines, and marine heatwaves bleaching corals from the Great Barrier to the Lakshadweep. For UPSC GS-III, ocean climate change weaves together pollution, biodiversity, disaster risk, and India’s blue economy.

How climate change is changing the ocean

1. Ocean heat content

Four independent datasets (NOAA, NASA, IAP, Copernicus) agree: ocean heat content has risen substantially since the 1950s and each of the last several years has set a new record. Most of this heat sits in the upper 700 m, but the warming signal now extends deeper.

SSTs have been consistently higher in the past three decades than any other time in the reliable instrumental record (since ~1880). SST rise drives:
