The ocean is the climate’s shock absorber. It has soaked up over 90% of the extra heat trapped by greenhouse gases and nearly 30% of anthropogenic CO2. That service is now coming at a cost — warming seas, acidifying chemistry, de-oxygenating waters, rising coastlines, and marine heatwaves bleaching corals from the Great Barrier to the Lakshadweep. For UPSC GS-III, ocean climate change weaves together pollution, biodiversity, disaster risk, and India’s blue economy.

How climate change is changing the ocean

1. Ocean heat content

Four independent datasets (NOAA, NASA, IAP, Copernicus) agree: ocean heat content has risen substantially since the 1950s and each of the last several years has set a new record. Most of this heat sits in the upper 700 m, but the warming signal now extends deeper.

SSTs have been consistently higher in the past three decades than any other time in the reliable instrumental record (since ~1880). SST rise drives:

Global mean sea level has risen at roughly 3.4 mm per year (2006-2018 average), accelerating from the 20th-century average of ~1.7 mm/year. Drivers:

Ocean pH has fallen by about 0.1 units since pre-industrial times — a roughly 30% increase in acidity. Impacts:

  • Calcifying organisms (corals, mollusks, foraminifera) struggle to build shells.
  • Plankton community shifts propagate through marine food webs.
  • Pteropods, a key fish food, show dissolving shells in polar oceans.

5. Ocean stratification

Warmer surface water is less dense and less willing to mix with the cooler, denser deep water. Increased stratification:

  • Reduces nutrient upwelling to surface (less phytoplankton).
  • Decreases oxygen transport to depth.
  • Intensifies acidification near the surface.

Open-ocean oxygen content has fallen by around 2% since the 1960s; Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZs) are expanding. India's Arabian Sea OMZ is one of the largest and thickest in the world.

  • Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) — observational studies suggest it is at its weakest in ~1,600 years; full collapse is a tipping point flagged by the IPCC.
  • Western boundary currents (Gulf Stream, Kuroshio, Agulhas) are shifting poleward.
  • Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and ENSO teleconnections are intensifying under warming.

Sustained periods of anomalously high SSTs. Since 1982 their frequency has roughly doubled. Impacts:

  • Coral bleaching — the 2024 global bleaching event was the fourth on record.
  • Kelp forest collapse.
  • Mass fish mortalities.

Implications for India

Coastal vulnerability

  • India has 7,516 km coastline and 1,382 islands. Around 170 million Indians live within 50 km of the coast.
  • NCCR (Chennai) and NIO (Goa) research shows accelerated coastal erosion on east coast stretches.
  • Sundarbans — mangrove loss, saline intrusion, migration of Ghoramara inhabitants.

Cyclones

  • Arabian Sea cyclone frequency has risen sharply — Tauktae (2021), Biparjoy (2023), Remal (2024).
  • Rapid intensification is now the norm, making early warnings more difficult.

Fisheries and livelihoods

  • Tropical species poleward migration affects Indian fisheries; oil sardine range has shifted.
  • Ocean acidification threatens the coastal mollusk economy.
