Between 2020 and 2024 India did something it had resisted for fifty years — it separated the regulator, the promoter and the commercial arm of its space programme from ISRO. Two new institutions carry that weight today: IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) and NSIL (NewSpace India Limited).

Why India Needed New Institutions

IN-SPACe — The Authoriser and Promoter
Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre is an autonomous nodal agency under the Department of Space (DoS), headquartered at Bengaluru and headed by a Chairperson appointed by the Cabinet Committee on Security. It was operationalised in June 2022.

NSIL — The Commercial Arm
