Vikram Sarabhai: The Visionary Behind ISRO

Dr. Vikram Sarabhai (1919–1971) was a physicist, industrialist, and institution builder. PSLV is ISRO's most reliable rocket. It has launched satellites for over 30 countries. The PSLV-C37 mission in 2017 set a world record by launching 104 satellites in a single mission.

Major ISRO Missions: A Complete Overview

Earth Observation and Satellites

ISRO's bread and butter is Earth observation. The IRS (Indian Remote Sensing) series and the INSAT/GSAT series have transformed India's telecommunications, weather forecasting, and disaster management.

INSAT series: India's first operational satellite system for communication and meteorology. INSAT-1B (1983) was the first fully operational satellite.

Cartosat series: High-resolution Earth imaging satellites used for mapping, urban planning, and defence.

Lunar Missions

Chandrayaan-1 (2008): India's first lunar mission. Discovered water molecules in the lunar soil — one of the most significant lunar discoveries in decades. Carried the Moon Impact Probe (MIP), which crash-landed on the Moon.

Chandrayaan-2 (2019): Included an orbiter, lander (Vikram), and rover (Pragyan). The orbiter continues to function. But the lander crash-landed due to a software error in the final descent phase — a painful near-miss.

Chandrayaan-3 (2023): Vindication. On 23 August 2023, Vikram lander touched down safely near the lunar south pole. India became the fourth country to achieve a soft lunar landing and the first to land near the south pole — a region of enormous scientific interest because of potential water ice deposits.

Mars Mission

Mangalyaan / Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) (2013–2014): India's first interplanetary mission. It entered Mars orbit on 24 September 2014 on the first attempt — making India the first country to succeed on a debut Mars mission. The mission cost ₹450 crore — less than the Hollywood film Gravity.

MOM operated for over seven years before communication was lost in 2022. A magnificent overperformance of its designed six-month life.

Solar Mission

Aditya-L1 (2023): India's first solar observatory mission. Launched in September 2023, it reached the Lagrange Point 1 (L1) — a gravitational balance point between Earth and the Sun — in January 2024. From there it continuously observes the Sun without eclipses, studying solar wind, coronal mass ejections, and space weather.

Navigation: NavIC

NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is India's regional satellite navigation system — India's answer to GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. It provides positioning services across India and 1,500 km beyond its borders. NavIC uses 7 satellites (3 geostationary + 4 geosynchronous).

NavIC is significant for strategic reasons — India cannot rely entirely on foreign navigation systems for military operations or disaster response.

Space Docking Experiment

SpaDeX (Space Docking Experiment, 2024): ISRO demonstrated space docking technology — the ability of two spacecraft to connect in orbit. India became only the fourth country (after USA, Russia, China) to demonstrate this capability. Docking is essential for future space station and lunar sample return missions.

Gaganyaan: India's Human Spaceflight Mission

Before the crewed mission, ISRO is flying uncrewed test missions (G1, G2) and a HLVM3 test vehicle abort mission (TV-D1), which successfully tested the crew escape system in October 2023.
