Bioeconomy in India — $80 billion size, biopharma, bio-agriculture, bio-industry, BioE3 Policy 2024, $300B target 2030 — UPSC GS III notes.

India's bioeconomy crossed $150 billion in 2023 — more than double the 2020 figure — and the BioE3 (Biotechnology for Economy, Environment, Employment) Policy approved by the Union Cabinet in August 2024 sets a $300 billion target by 2030. The country went from ~2% of global biotech revenue a decade ago to ~4% today. For UPSC GS III, bioeconomy is a recurring theme under science and technology, indigenisation, economy and health.

Practice question — "The BioE3 Policy is ambitious but depends on execution. Critically examine."

Biology is to the 21st century what chemistry was to the 20th. India has chosen not just to participate but to lead — and the BioE3 framework is the most coherent bet the government has placed on that proposition.
