How to write a UPSC Mains essay that scores 130+
- Decode the topic first.Spend 8-10 minutes on the title alone. Identify the keyword, the implied question, and the angle (descriptive / analytical / philosophical) before you write a single line.
- Plan in 12 minutes, write in 90.Sketch a 5-7 point flow before the introduction. A planned essay outscores an inspired one — examiners reward structure.
- Use the introduction to commit to a thesis.Open with a story, a paradox, a quote or a concrete moment — but end the intro with one sentence stating your argument. Vague openings cost marks.
- One idea per paragraph, anchored to an example. Each paragraph should advance one claim and ground it in a real example (a scheme, a judgment, a country, a person, a number).
- Bring three lenses: India, the world, philosophy.A first-quartile essay weaves Indian context, comparative international experience, and a philosophical or ethical hook. Don't rely on India alone.
- Conclude with action and aspiration. The final paragraph should answer "so what?" with concrete way forward + a forward-looking sentence. Avoid clichés like "every coin has two sides".
