India's coastline: resources and hazards

India's coastline of about 7,500 km, spanning nine coastal states and its island territories, is both a vast resource frontier and a zone of high hazard exposure.

Resource potential

  • Fisheries: a large marine catch supported by an Exclusive Economic Zone of over 2 million sq km, sustaining coastal livelihoods and exports.
