What is a mantle plume

A mantle plume is a narrow, upwelling column of abnormally hot, buoyant rock that rises from deep within the mantle - possibly from the core-mantle boundary - towards the lithosphere, largely independent of plate boundaries. Where it reaches the surface it produces a “hotspot” of persistent volcanic activity.

Role in plate tectonics

  • It drives intraplate volcanism and hotspots that ordinary boundary tectonics cannot explain, such as Hawaii and Iceland.
