The Circum-Pacific Zone, popularly called the 'Ring of Fire', is a roughly 40,000 km horseshoe-shaped belt of intense tectonic activity encircling the Pacific Ocean — from the Andes and Rockies through the Aleutians, Japan and the Philippines down to New Zealand.
Geophysical characteristics
- Convergent plate margins: the Pacific and adjoining plates (Nazca, Cocos, Philippine, Juan de Fuca) subduct beneath continental or oceanic plates, making this the world's most active subduction system.
- Seismicity: about 80 per cent of the world's earthquakes occur here, including the largest ever recorded (Valdivia, Chile, 1960) and deep-focus shocks along inclined Benioff zones.
- Volcanism: roughly three-fourths of the world's active volcanoes lie in the belt — Fuji, Mount St Helens, Pinatubo, Cotopaxi — with typically explosive andesitic eruptions born of wet subducted crust.
