Cropping pattern refers to temporal or spatial arrangement of crops in a particular area. The cropping pattern of a region is a cumulative result of longterm agricultural practices, physical conditions, Government policies, monetary considerations and historical factors.

Changes due to Consumption Patterns:

• Decline in Millets: Consumption of millets declined as consumers shifted towards rice and wheat due to rising incomes, availability through PDS, shorter cooking time and greater availability of processed cereal products.
• Rise of Pulses & Horticulture: Growing demand for protein-rich and micronutrient-rich foods has increased cultivation of pulses, fruits and vegetables.
• Demand for Organic Produce: Rising health consciousness among urban consumers has expanded the area under organic cultivation, particularly fruits and vegetables.
• Emergence of Superfoods: Growing domestic and export demand for nutritionally rich products such as Makhana, quinoa and millets has encouraged farmers to diversify towards these crops.

Changes due to Marketing Conditions

• Government Procurement & Price Support: MSP-backed procurement has encouraged cultivation of rice and wheat, particularly in Punjab and Haryana. Similarly, FRP and procurement support for sugarcane encouraged rapid expansion of sugarcane cultivation.
