This can lead to several diseases like, Arsenic contamination causes arsenicosis, Fluoride contamination leads to dental and skeletal fluorosis, Nitrate contamination is associated with Blue Baby Syndrome) and Lead contamination causes neurological disorders, developmental delays in children and anaemia, while mercury contamination results in neurological impairment and kidney damage.

Therefore, addressing groundwater contamination requires a shift from extraction-centric water management to aquifer-based governance, as recommended by the Mihir Shah Committee, through integrated regulation, scientific monitoring and community-led aquifer management.
