An Integrated Farming System (IFS) is a resource-efficient, whole-farm approach that combines crops with allied enterprises such as dairy, poultry, fishery, apiculture, agro-forestry and horticulture on the same holding, so that the by-product of one enterprise becomes an input for another. It converts a mono-cropped plot into a diversified, self-sustaining unit.
Working principle
IFS is built on recycling and complementarity: crop residue feeds livestock, animal dung produces manure and biogas, pond silt enriches fields, and pond water irrigates crops. This closes nutrient and energy loops, reducing external input dependence.
