Status of digitalisation

India has built a world-leading digital public infrastructure — the “India Stack” of Aadhaar, UPI and data-sharing layers. UPI now processes record volumes of real-time payments, the JAM trinity (Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile) powers Direct Benefit Transfer that has plugged leakages, and platforms like DigiLocker, CoWIN, FASTag and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) are deepening the shift. The digital economy is estimated at around a tenth of GDP and rising.

Problems faced

  • A persistent digital divide — rural, gender and income gaps in access and smartphones.
  • Cybersecurity risks: rising frauds, data breaches and attacks on critical infrastructure.
  • Data privacy concerns, now addressed by the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
  • Low digital literacy and patchy last-mile connectivity; slow MSME adoption.

Suggested improvements

  • Complete BharatNet to connect all gram panchayats and expand affordable devices.
  • Strengthen cybersecurity (CERT-In) and operationalise data-protection safeguards.
  • Scale digital-literacy missions such as PMGDISHA, promote vernacular content, and support MSME digitisation through ONDC and easy credit.

India's strength lies in scale and public-good design; converting that reach into secure, inclusive access is the unfinished task. Inclusive, secure digitalisation can turn connectivity into genuine economic empowerment.

Key points

What an examiner expects to see

  • Anchor on India Stack / digital public infrastructure: Aadhaar, UPI, data-sharing layers.
  • Cite achievements: record UPI volumes, JAM-enabled Direct Benefit Transfer cutting leakages, ONDC, DigiLocker, FASTag.
  • Note the digital economy at roughly 10% of GDP and growing.
  • Problem: digital divide across rural/urban, gender and income lines.
  • Problem: cybersecurity threats and data-privacy gaps — now the DPDP Act, 2023.
  • Problem: low digital literacy, last-mile connectivity, slow MSME adoption.
  • Improvements: complete BharatNet, strengthen CERT-In, scale PMGDISHA literacy and MSME digitisation.
