Tea demands 150–250 cm of well-distributed rainfall, persistently high humidity, mist and cloud cover, mild frost-free temperatures and well-drained acidic slopes. The British found this full combination only up to Darjeeling.

Why plantations failed west of Darjeeling

  • Rainfall from the south-west monsoon declines steadily westward along the Himalaya — from over 200–300 cm in Assam and the Darjeeling hills to barely 100–150 cm in Himachal Pradesh, slipping below tea’s requirement.
  • Rainfall also becomes strongly seasonal westward, with a long dry winter; tea needs showers spread through the year, which only the eastern hills receive.
  • Winter precipitation in the western Himalaya arrives with western disturbances as snow and frost, which injure tea bushes; Darjeeling’s winters stay comparatively mild and moist.
  • The persistent fog, mist and high humidity that force the slow leaf growth behind fine flavour characterize the eastern hills but vanish in the drier west, where the diurnal temperature range is also larger.
  • The cheap, abundant plantation labour and the river-and-rail transport network of the Assam–Bengal belt had no counterpart in the western hills.

Only sheltered, humid pockets such as the Kangra Valley sustained small tea gardens. The plantations thus prospered exactly as far as the moist eastern Himalayan climate extended — beyond Darjeeling, the environment itself refused.
