You answer five questions out of eight in three hours, and two of them are compulsory. Most candidates who know the syllabus still walk out having written four and a half answers. The test series trains the selection and the pacing, which is the part reading cannot teach you.
What’s included
History optional is 500 marks across two papers with a compulsory map question, a compulsory set of short notes in each paper, and a 50-50 split between halves that most candidates prepare unevenly. A generic mock schedule does not touch any of that.
Eight questions in two sections, attempt five, Question 1 and Question 5 compulsory, 250 marks in three hours. Papers are set to that shape rather than as a flat list of questions, because choosing which three optional questions to attempt is itself a skill.
Question 1 is compulsory and worth 50 marks, which is 12.5 per cent of Paper 1. Forty per cent of the hints UPSC has used are Stone Age and proto-historic sites. Every Paper 1 paper here carries a full twenty-site map, marked the way UPSC marks it.
Paper 1 runs on 15-mark answers; Paper 2 uses only 10s and 20s and no 15-markers at all. Practising one length for both papers is the most common avoidable mistake in History optional preparation.
Every script comes back with marks per part and written comments on structure, evidence and the historiography you did or did not cite. A score alone tells you nothing you can act on.
World history is exactly half of Paper 2 and it is the half most candidates leave underprepared. Sectional papers cover revolutions, industrialisation, the nation-state system, the wars and European integration on their own.
Unit-wise papers first so a weak area surfaces while there is time to fix it, then full-length mocks under the real three-hour constraint.
How a test week runs
The paper is the cheap part. What changes your score is a marked script with a comment on why an argument did not land.
Fixed slot, three hours, five answers. Writing four answers in a relaxed sitting teaches you nothing about the paper you will actually sit.

Who teaches it
Ancient and medieval papers come from the faculty who teach Paper 1, modern and world papers from the faculty who teach Paper 2. The person who set the question is the person who marks your answer to it.
