5th-Generation Combat Aircraft Testing Centre 

Why in News?

The foundation stone for the Core Integration & Flight Testing Centre (CIFTC) was laid at Puttaparthi, Sri Sathya Sai District, Andhra Pradesh, to fast-track the development of Fifth-Generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and other future indigenous platforms.

Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA): 

  • The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is India’s indigenous 5th-generation (classified as 5.5-gen) stealth multirole combat aircraft.
  • Being designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), an autonomous body under DRDO.
  • Missions: Air supremacy, ground strike, SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defences), and Electronic Warfare. Intended to eventually replace the Sukhoi Su-30MKI as the IAF’s primary air superiority platform.

AMCA is intended to strengthen the Indian Air Force’s future combat capability and reduce dependence on imported fighter aircraft. 

Core Integration & Flight Testing Centre: 

  • The CIFTC is the single most critical infrastructure investment in the AMCA programme.
  • Location: Puttaparthi, Sri Sathya Sai District, Andhra Pradesh
  • Spread over ~650 acres, it will serve as India’s national hub for aircraft integration, validation, flight testing, and certification. 

The AMCA prototypes will be designed and assembled at ADA’s Bengaluru facility, then transferred to this Puttaparthi centre for final integration and flight trials. This would place India in the elite club of nations that develop and fly 5th-gen aircraft indigenously.

Significance: 

  • Indigenous Testing Capability: The facility will enable Aircraft integration, Systems validation, Flight testing, simulation, and certification. This reduces reliance on foreign testing infrastructure.
  • Strategic / Security Dimension:
    • India joins the exclusive club of nations (US, Russia, China) capable of designing and testing a 5th-gen combat aircraft indigenously. 
    • The AMCA will address the IAF’s critical capability gap created by the cancellation of the Indo-Russian FGFA project in 2019. Advanced stealth (low RCS), supercruise, AESA radar, and internal weapons make it a force multiplier in contested airspace. 
  • Technology & Innovation: 
    • AMCA’s AESA radar uses Gallium Nitride (GaN) TRMs with a Vivaldi antenna design, offering superior bandwidth and low probability of intercept.
    • The engine co-development agreement with France’s Safran (announced in 2025) under ‘Horizon 2047’ provides full IPR transfer to India’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE).
  • Economic Dimension (Aatmanirbhar Bharat): CIFTC and associated projects are expected to generate 7,500+ direct jobs and catalyse a broader high-tech industrial ecosystem. Local institutions (engineering colleges and ITIs) are positioned as integral supply-chain partners.

The establishment of the Core Integration & Flight Testing Centre marks a major milestone in India’s aerospace and defence modernisation journey.
