About Anne Carson:

  • Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1950, Carson is known for combining poetry, fiction, essays, translation and scholarship.
  • Carson’s award recognises her overall contribution rather than one particular book.
  • Her writing reinterprets ancient texts and myths through contemporary experiences, often crossing conventional boundaries between literary genres.
    • Blending literary forms: Her works combine verse, narrative and critical reflection. E.g., ‘Autobiography of Red’ is a novel in verse.
    • She draws upon Greek mythology and classical authors to explore contemporary human experiences. Her translations bring ancient texts into new cultural and artistic settings.
    • Her collaborations extend to theatre, visual art, choreography and opera, widening the possibilities of literary expression.
  • Major Works: Autobiography of Red, The Beauty of the Husband, The Glass Essay, The Trojan Women, etc.
