यूपीएससी अनिवार्य अंग्रेज़ी पेपर में Grammar और Usage के 40 अंक हैं — प्रश्न sentence transformation, voice, direct-indirect speech, tense त्रुटियों और idioms पर पूछे जाते हैं। Precis या निबंध के विपरीत, व्याकरण नियमों को याद रखने का पुरस्कार देता है। एक क्रमबद्ध अभ्यासी 40 में से 30+ अंक का लक्ष्य रख सकता है।

Tenses: सबसे अधिक पूछा जाने वाला क्षेत्र
यूपीएससी पेपर में लगभग एक-तिहाई व्याकरण-त्रुटियाँ tense-बेमेल से जुड़ी होती हैं। तीन नियम 80% मामलों को कवर करते हैं:
- Past-tense narration में, subordinate clauses सामान्यतः past में बदल जाते हैं: He said he was tired (न कि is tired)।
- Since और for के साथ Present perfect: I have lived here since 2015, न कि I live here since 2015।
- किसी निश्चित past समय के साथ Present perfect नहीं, Simple past का प्रयोग करें: I met him yesterday, न कि I have met him yesterday।
Subject-Verb Agreement
- Collective nouns (team, committee, jury) जब एक इकाई के रूप में कार्य करते हैं तो singular verb लेते हैं।
- Either…or और neither…nor: क्रिया समीपस्थ subject से मेल खाती है।
- A number of = plural; the number of = singular।
- दूरी, मात्रा और समयावधि singular verb लेती हैं: Ten kilometres is a long walk.
Active और Passive Voice
नियम सीधा है: Active का object, Passive का subject बन जाता है; verb be का रूप + past participle बनता है; Active का subject by से प्रस्तुत agent बन जाता है (अक्सर छोड़ दिया जाता है)।
Active: The committee approved the proposal.
Passive: The proposal was approved by the committee.
Modal verbs पर ध्यान दें: must do → must be done; has completed → has been completed।
Direct और Indirect Speech
तीन परिवर्तन: quotation marks हटते हैं, reporting verb समायोजित होता है, और tense/pronoun/time-word पीछे खिसकते हैं (backshift)।

Prepositions: बार-बार आने वाले जाल
- Different from (न कि different than)
- Comprises के साथ कोई preposition नहीं — comprises of ग़लत है
- Consist of, पर ‘to lie in’ के अर्थ में consist in
- Discuss के साथ about नहीं: We discussed the issue
- Married to, न कि married with
Articles
- Singular countable nouns के पहले परिचय पर a/an प्रयोग करें।
- विशिष्ट, पूर्वोल्लिखित या अद्वितीय संज्ञाओं के लिए the प्रयोग करें।
- Proper nouns (India, Gandhi), abstract nouns (honesty) और अधिकांश भोजनों (breakfast) के साथ article नहीं।
- नदियों, समुद्रों, पर्वत शृंखलाओं और आधिकारिक पदों के साथ the: the Ganges, the Himalayas, the Prime Minister।
