Edition Highlights

1984–1995: A tournament takes root. The first Asia Cup, in Sharjah in 1984, was a three-team round-robin won by India — no final was played. Sri Lanka won at home in 1986 (an edition India skipped), and India then won three in a row across 1988, 1990–91 and 1995, all with final wins over Sri Lanka.

1997–2014: The Sri Lankan surge and Pakistan’s titles. Sri Lanka won in 1997, 2004 and 2008, making the most of home conditions in two of those. Pakistan claimed their first title in 2000 in Dhaka and a second in 2012, edging hosts Bangladesh by two runs in one of the tournament’s best finals. Sri Lanka added a fifth title in 2014.

2016–2023: The format era. The 2016 edition was the first played as T20Is; India beat Bangladesh in the final in Mirpur. India won again in 2018 in the UAE, Sri Lanka took the 2022 T20I edition, and India crushed Sri Lanka in the rain-affected 2023 ODI edition.

2025: The first India–Pakistan final. Played across UAE venues in September 2025, the ninth Indian title came in the tournament’s first ever India–Pakistan final. Kuldeep Yadav’s 4/30 helped bowl Pakistan out for 146, and Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 69 carried India home by 5 wickets with two balls to spare, per the ESPNcricinfo match report.
