UPSC guide to IoT: architecture, applications in smart cities, agriculture, health, security challenges, India's IoT policy and 2024-26 updates.

Internet of Things (IoT) (UPSC Science & Tech) — UPSC featured image

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical objects — sensors, devices, vehicles, machines — that collect and exchange data over the internet. Globally, there are an estimated ~18 billion connected IoT devices in 2024, projected to cross 30 billion by 2030. India's IoT market — ~USD 15 billion in 2024 — is growing at 20-25% annually across smart cities, factories, agriculture and mobility. For UPSC, IoT is a GS Paper III — Science & Technology, Economy, Internal Security topic with ties to GS Paper II (Governance).

What is IoT?

IoT connects:

  • Sensors (temperature, humidity, motion, location, vibration, gas, soil).
  • Actuators (valves, motors, displays).
  • Edge/gateway devices (routers, smart meters, cameras).
  • Cloud/edge platforms (analytics, storage, dashboards).
  • Applications (mobile apps, enterprise systems, public dashboards).

IoT rides on connectivity (5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRa, NB-IoT, LTE-M, satellite), cloud computing, AI/ML, and digital platforms.
