Dr Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai (1919-1971) is celebrated as the father of India's space programme. He founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL, 1947), persuaded Nehru's government to create the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR, 1962) — which became ISRO in 1969 — and shaped institutions ranging from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA, 1961) to Nehru Foundation for Development and Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association (ATIRA). For UPSC, Sarabhai appears in GS Paper I (nation-building), GS Paper III (Science & Technology), and as a personality reference in essay and ethics.

Early life and education

  • Born 12 August 1919 in Ahmedabad to the industrialist Ambalal Sarabhai family.
  • Early tutors included Rabindranath Tagore (at the family’s schooling experiments with Maria Montessori).
  • Studied at Gujarat College, then St John's College, Cambridge (natural sciences tripos, 1940).
  • During WWII, returned to IISc Bangalore to work with C.V. Raman on cosmic rays.
  • PhD from Cambridge (1947) on "Cosmic Ray Investigations in Tropical Latitudes".

Founding the Physical Research Laboratory

At just 28 years old, Sarabhai founded PRL in Ahmedabad (1947) with support from the Sarabhai family's Karmakshetra Educational Foundation and Ahmedabad Education Society. PRL focused on:

  • Cosmic ray and upper atmosphere research.
  • Geophysics, planetary atmospheres.
  • Later — astronomy, laser physics, theoretical physics.

PRL remained Sarabhai's intellectual home throughout his life and is today one of India's premier research institutes — the original seedbed of ISRO's science programmes.

Convincing India that a poor country needed a space programme

In the early 1960s, Sarabhai famously argued:

"There are some who question the relevance of space activities in a developing nation. To us, there is no ambiguity of purpose. We do not have the fantasy of competing with the economically advanced nations in the exploration of the Moon or the planets or manned space-flight. But we are convinced that if we are to play a meaningful role nationally, and in the community of nations, we must be second to none in the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of man and society."

This single framing reoriented Indian space policy towards developmental applications — communication, television, weather, education, resource surveys — setting ISRO's enduring DNA.

Building ISRO

INCOSPAR (1962)

With Homi Bhabha's support, Nehru approved the Indian National Committee for Space Research under the DAE in 1962. Sarabhai was its first chairman.

Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS, 1963)

Sarabhai personally identified Thumba (Thiruvananthapuram) — near the magnetic equator — as India's first rocket launch site. The first sounding rocket (an American Nike-Apache) was launched from Thumba on 21 November 1963. The site was gifted a portion by the Catholic Church (a local chapel still sits on the campus, preserved as a museum).

ISRO (1969)

Sarabhai succeeded Bhabha as AEC Chair (1966-71) after Bhabha's death. In 1969, he reorganised INCOSPAR into the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), with a clear mandate: space applications for Indian development. In 1972 (a year after his death), the Space Commission and the Department of Space were set up.

SITE (1975-76) — the "greatest communication experiment in human history"

Sarabhai conceptualised the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE), finally executed in 1975-76 using NASA's ATS-6 satellite. Television signals reached 2,400 villages across six states, broadcasting content on health, agriculture and family planning. UNESCO described SITE as the "largest sociological experiment in the world" and it became the template for INSAT-driven rural development.

Scientific contributions

  • Cosmic ray research — extensive work with C.V. Raman and Manilal Rustomji Shastri; established time variations in cosmic ray intensity at tropical latitudes.
  • Solar-terrestrial relationships — Sarabhai's PhD and later work linked solar activity to geomagnetic and cosmic ray variations.
  • Ionospheric studies — key groundwork for atmospheric science in India.
  • Atomic Energy — during his AEC chairmanship, the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR), Kalpakkam power plant and Nuclear Fuel Complex (Hyderabad) were either initiated or expanded.

Personal life and temperament

  • Married Mrinalini Swaminathan, a renowned classical dancer, in 1942.
  • Children: Kartikeya Sarabhai (environmental educator) and Mallika Sarabhai (dancer, activist).
  • Known for a democratic, consensus-driven leadership style — his internal letters and handwritten notes emphasised empowerment of young scientists.
  • Combined industrial pragmatism with Gandhian ideals — his institutions were both self-sustaining and socially rooted.

Death and legacy

  • Sarabhai died suddenly of a heart attack on 30 December 1971 at Thumba, aged 52.
  • The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) at Thiruvananthapuram, India's main launcher development lab, bears his name.
  • The "Vikram" lander of Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3 is named after him — Chandrayaan-3 touched down on the Moon's south pole on 23 August 2023.
  • International Space Science award and many PRL fellowships and chairs are named after him.
