Wren and Martin is the grammar book your school teacher probably owned, and the question you’re bringing to it now is a practical one: does a school grammar help with the UPSC English paper, SSC or CDS, and how much of it do you need? It helps, and you need about a third of it. High School English Grammar and Composition is a reference grammar with exercises. Who Wren and Martin is for, and who can skip it
Wren and Martin is a core book for aspirants whose grammar is shaky and whose exam has an objective English section. For a UPSC aspirant whose English is already sound, it’s a reference to open when an error needs a rule.
The stakes in UPSC are specific. The English paper in Mains carries 300 marks, is set at Matriculation standard and needs 25% to qualify. UPSC evaluates your ranked papers only for candidates who clear that bar, so failing a qualifying paper sets the rest aside. The paper tests your ability to read and understand serious prose and to express ideas clearly and correctly.

That leaves the verb chapters, articles, prepositions, conjunctions and transformation as the reading list for almost everyone. A verb error, the wrong tense after if or a singular subject with a plural verb, is the most common kind of mistake in written answers, and the verb block is where the book is strongest.
How to read Wren and Martin in four weeks
The method is rule, exercise, check and your own sentence. Forty-five minutes a day for four weeks, with the grammar in the week and writing at the weekend.
- Week 1, verbs. Voice, tenses, the future, person and number, modals. Do every exercise, check it with the Key, and write five sentences of your own that use each rule correctly.
- Week 2, articles, prepositions and conjunctions. The small words carry the most errors in a written answer. Keep a list of every preposition pairing you got wrong.
- Week 3, transformation, relative pronouns and adjectives. Sentence conversion is the section that turns grammar knowledge into flexible writing.
- Week 4, composition. Read the precis method once, then write one precis and one short essay from a previous-year paper, and correct it against the common errors list.

What to skip, and what to cross-check
Skip the full adjective and noun sequences if UPSC is your only exam, skip the conjugation tables except as a lookup, and skip the school essays in the composition part. They were written for high school students, and the publisher’s own description pitches the book at classes 9 to 12. A UPSC short essay needs an argument, not a description of a festival.
Cross-check anything the book treats as fixed usage:
- Older idiom and formal usage. A few examples read as dated British English. If a usage sounds odd, check a modern dictionary before you copy it into an answer.
