Precis writing (संक्षेपण) is a 60-mark section where most aspirants leak 15–20 marks needlessly. The task is simple to state but hard to execute: read a 300-word Hindi passage and summarise it in roughly 100 words — about one-third the original length — while preserving its complete meaning.

Done right, this is the most predictable scoring section in the entire paper. Done wrong, it can sink your qualifying chances.

What is Precis in UPSC Hindi Compulsory?

A precis is a short, crisp summary written in your own words. It should convey all key ideas of the original passage but in about one-third of the word count. UPSC provides a passage of 250–350 words; your precis must be 80–120 words.

Correct word count (1/3)15 marks
Covering all key points20 marks
Own words, not copied lines10 marks
Grammar and coherence10 marks
Appropriate title (शीर्षक)5 marks

The 5-Step Precis Method

  1. Read twice. First reading: understand overall theme. Second reading: mark key ideas.
  2. Underline key points. Usually 5–7 main ideas exist in a 300-word passage.
  3. Draft in rough. Write bullet points in your own words. Do not look at the passage while drafting.
  4. Count and trim. Reduce to exactly one-third word count (±10%).
  5. Add a title. 3–6 words that capture the central idea.

Sample Passage (लगभग 280 words)

Notice: every original point is preserved, the word count is 95 (one-third of 280), no sentence is copied verbatim, and a clear title is given.

Do’s and Don’ts

DoDon’t
Use own wordsCopy-paste sentences
Stick to 1/3 word countWrite more than 120 words
Give a short titleSkip the title
Keep one paragraphBreak into many paragraphs
Use third-person, past/present tenseUse ‘I think’ or personal opinion
Keep tone neutralAdd examples not in the passage

Common Mistakes That Cost Marks

  • Exceeding word limit by 30+ words → automatic 3–5 mark deduction.
  • Copying phrases verbatim → examiner marks it as weak.
  • Missing the title → 5 marks straight gone.
  • Adding personal opinion or extra examples → out-of-scope deduction.
  • Using bullet points → precis must be in flowing prose.

Practice Strategy

  1. Pick any Hindi editorial from Dainik Jagran or Jansatta every day.
  2. Summarise it in one-third length within 15 minutes.
  3. Cross-check word count with a small counter or manual count.
  4. Do this for 21 days. You will see dramatic improvement.

Time Allocation in Exam

Spend 25–30 minutes on this section: 5 min reading, 10 min drafting, 10 min final copy, 3 min counting and title. Do not exceed 30 minutes — you still have translation, grammar, and comprehension to attempt.

Sample Titles That Work

  • भारतीय कृषि की चुनौतियाँ (if passage is about farm problems)
  • शिक्षा का महत्त्व और भविष्य (for education-related passages)
  • पर्यावरण संरक्षण की आवश्यकता (for environment-themed passages)
  • भ्रष्टाचार: एक सामाजिक रोग (for corruption-themed passages)

A precis is not a creative essay; it is disciplined compression. The aspirant who compresses accurately — without adding or missing ideas — walks away with 45+ marks out of 60 almost every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ideal length of a UPSC precis?

About one-third of the original passage. If the passage is 300 words, the precis should be 100 words (±10 words tolerance).

Do I need to write a title for the precis?

Yes. The title (शीर्षक) carries approximately 5 marks. It should be 3–6 words capturing the central idea.

Can I copy sentences from the passage?

No. Precis must be in your own words. Copying sentences reduces the ‘own words’ marks significantly.

How long should I take for the precis section?

Allocate 25–30 minutes. Anything more eats into time you need for translation and grammar.

Should I write the precis in bullet points?

No. A precis must be in continuous, flowing prose, usually in one paragraph.
