What Is the UMANG App?
Think of UMANG as a front door. The services behind it — EPFO, LPG distributors, the National Scholarship Portal, DigiLocker, state e-District portals — keep running on their own systems. UMANG signs you in once and passes you through to each of them, so one login and one app replace a dozen bookmarks and passwords.
Three design choices make it useful:
- One identity. Your mobile number (with an MPIN you set) is the key to everything inside.

How to Download and Register on UMANG
- Install the app from the official UMANG listing on Google Play (publisher: “MeitY, Government Of India”) or from the Apple App Store. Avoid look-alike apps.
- Open the app, choose your language, and tap Register.
- Enter your mobile number and verify it with the OTP sent by SMS.
- Set an MPIN — a short numeric PIN you will use for future logins. Pick something you can recall but not your birth year.
- Optionally fill in your profile and link Aadhaar. Linking is not compulsory for the app itself, but several services inside (such as Aadhaar-based EPFO verification) need it.
That is the whole registration. Logging in later takes your mobile number plus the MPIN, or an OTP if you forget the PIN.
Using UMANG on the Web
Everything above also works without installing anything. Go to web.umang.gov.in, click login, and authenticate with your mobile number and OTP. The web dashboard mirrors the app: search for a department or service by name, open it, and sign in to that service if it asks.
The web version is the sensible route when you are filling long forms, downloading PDFs, or helping a family member from your own computer.
The Most-Used Services on UMANG
EPFO (provident fund). This is UMANG’s flagship. EPFO has moved UAN generation and activation to UMANG using Aadhaar face authentication — you verify your face against Aadhaar in the app, your details are pre-filled from the Aadhaar database, and the UAN comes active with an e-UAN card PDF, no employer needed (PIB, Ministry of Labour & Employment, April 2025). The pattern is the same for every service. Open the service inside UMANG, and the first time it will ask you to identify yourself to *that* department — UAN and OTP for EPFO, LPG consumer number for a gas company, DigiLocker credentials for DigiLocker. UMANG remembers the link, so from the second visit the service opens directly. Unlinking is available from the service or profile settings if you change jobs, distributors, or numbers.

Troubleshooting
- OTP not arriving. Check that the number is active and not blocking promotional SMS; retry after a minute. Persistent failures usually clear by trying the web login instead.
- Forgot MPIN. Use the OTP login option, then reset the MPIN from settings.
- A service shows an error inside UMANG. The fault is usually with the department’s own system, not UMANG. EPFO, for instance, took its services down across all channels — including UMANG — during a systems migration in late June 2026. Wait and retry, or use the department’s own portal to cross-check.
- New phone or number. Your UMANG account follows your mobile number. If you change numbers, update the profile from the old login first, or re-verify through the help options.
- Wrong app installed. The genuine app’s publisher is “MeitY, Government Of India”. Uninstall anything else claiming to be UMANG.
